Pain in leg - not doing anything different

Nearly 2 years ago I started getting pain in my right hip. I would get it if I did a lot of walking or when I got up from sitting down. It kind of feels like my leg is going to collapse under me. This went on for a while so I saw gp. I was referred for an x-ray as DS had CDH, but this showed nothing wrong. I then went for physio which helped. I have to do pelvic floor exercises and a stretch for the muscle that goes round my bum & down the back of my leg. This helped and the pain went away pretty much.

It's been ok for about a year, but came back again about 2 months ago. I don't get it if I walk a lot, but I seem to get it after I get up from sitting down, when I have to walk up a hill or stairs (esp when I go up to bed). I've now noticed a pain in the side of my calf. Well it's more of an ache and it's sort of burning. I don't know if it could be linked to the other pain. I still do the stretches every day. It's not excruciating or anything, but not sure if I should just live with it or see gp again. DH reckons I've got sciatica (which he has), but would that go right down your leg? I also get painful toes when they are cold.

any advice greatly appreciated!

Hi dollybird. I went to gp a couple of weeks ago with tingling all the way down the back of my leg and random pains down the front of my thigh, shin and calf. He said it's sciatica and that the pains can be anywhere in your leg. I did find a good site after googling that has diagrams of the different places it can affect in your leg.

When you say burning, do you mean to touch, or inside? Is there any swelling or redness?

For years and years and years I've had pain in my legs - nearly always the right one but sometimes teh left. Achey, tingling, niggling pain that you're always aware of but not crippled by. It's not constant but very regular. In the last year or so, I've had to see an osteopath about pelvic/back pain and I now think that the leg pain comes from that - the skeleton having to compensate in someway. Mine is worse in the evenings. So, long-winded way of saying could it be related to any back/pelvic pain/damage? I didn't really make teh connection until saw an osteopath.

hi tinker - that's exactly it ( the pain you describe) - the burning is not to touch - it feels more like it's on the inside. I haven't damaged my back in the past (not that i'm aware of - only usual stuff after moving something heavy). Would an osteo help? DH has it too (that was caused by a back injury - he fell out the loft down the stairs) would be good to know if there's anything that can be done to help.

Don't know db. Maybe but at £40 odd seems and expensive way to find out. Could you ask for a physio referral from your GP maybe?

And get your feet checked. Flat feet can cause a lot of pain in legs, knees, hips and back. Worth a try - and an Orthopaedic Dr can organise it for you on the NHS. It is called a biomechanical assessment.
