Has anyone ever taken Tramadol short term

i.e 5-10 days for severe pain? Does it have any side effects?

runnyhabbit · 27/04/2009 21:05

The only think side effect I had was a little dizziness, and sometimes, a little sick feeling. Was on it for nearly 2 weeks, and these small side effects far outweighed the pain from kidney stones/infection

abbierhodes · 27/04/2009 21:08

It made me a bit spaced out. Excellent for the pain though.

Saltire · 27/04/2009 21:10

Hmm, doc wants me to go on it for a short while - along with my co-codamol and votarol, to try and ease this pain, have had a bad flare up for a while now.

Can cause constipation, saltie, so make sure you have plenty of fluids, eat plenty of fresh fruit etc.

Side effects can be dizziness, nausea, vomiting - the usual suspects. Strongly advise against driving whilst you are on tramadol.

Saltire · 27/04/2009 21:14

I get nasueous anyway if I take the co-codamola nd votarol for more than 5 days on the trot, am counting down the hours till 10pm whn I can take next does

DH was on it for a few days, he was quite spaced out but other than that he was fine. Most importantly it really helped with his pain. There's no way he could have driven whilst on them. After a couple of days he just took them at night so that he could sleep and tried to manage on co-codamol during the day.

Hope it helps you

psychomum5 · 27/04/2009 21:19

they are very spaced-out feeling. I was on tramadol after both my car accidents, but for 3mths each time, due to hip and chest injuries. they worked I must say, but they do make you feel 'sea sick' for want of a better way to describe it.

depends really on how bad the pain is. they will knock you out for the first day, which you might appreciate.

driving is not recomended tho!

abbierhodes · 27/04/2009 21:23

You can get lower dosage co-codamol, whic reduce the nausea but seem (to me anyway) just as effective for the pain. Not sure how it works exactly.
What is the pain, Saltire?

TattyCatty · 27/04/2009 21:23

Took them for 4 weeks following birth of DD due to infected haematoma on episiotomy scar. Agree with all the others that they make you feel spaced out, but the main side effect for me was splitting headaches. Doctor recommended that I take paracetamol with each dose (was also on 8 hourly Voltarol), and within a couple of doses the headaches had disappeared. Was also advised to make sure that I didn't suddenly stop taking them, but to wean myself off over a couple of days.

RaspberryBlower · 27/04/2009 21:25

I was very spaced out for a couple of days but then I seemed to get used to it. It's good stuff for pain.

Saltire · 27/04/2009 22:20

Spaced out isn't good, I get a bit like that on my current co-codamol dose( 2 x 30/500 mg at ngiht and 2x 8/500mg 4hrly as required during the day)but I'm on ym own with the Dses and a dog at the moment so need to be "with it". I wonder if I could get away with taking them just at night

abbierhodes - the pain is Fibromyalgia - widespread muscle and ligament pain, which is there all the time, in what I call my background pain, but occasionally I get severe pain during flare ups. This causes numbness and tingling in the fingers, occasional concentraion and memory problems, eye problems,IBS , headaches and fatigue. I get most of those problems during a flare up(I spilt a pan of boiling water yesterday, some of it went on my legs, all becasue my wrist gave way). I never know from one day to the next if I'm going to get a flare up or how long it will last

dh took it for about 5 days for severe pain. It helped a lot with the pain, but yes he did have side effects: constipation, and when he stopped taking them he felt shivery, couldn't sleep, achey, and very grumpy (that last one was observed by me ). In other words, he experienced withdrawal symptoms.

He says he'd use them in extreme circumstances, but with caution - and not for long.

Flare-ups sound awful, maybe you could take it for those days and avoid driving...? Hope it helps.

Elibean · 27/04/2009 22:25

And yes, why not try taking them at night and see? dh did that, after the first couple of days, because he needed to be 'with it' to work.

Saltire · 27/04/2009 22:28

Well yes, I still manange tow rok 3 hours a day, 4 days a week, and need to be with it for that as well. Might suggest it when I see doc, he said to think about it (and not read anyhting on google about them) and let him know what I decide, but I need something I can't go on like this

OP posts:
runnyhabbit · 27/04/2009 22:48

Would def avoid driving whilst taking them. I was also given co-codamol and voltarol at the same time.

I found that Voltarol actually made me feel the worse, in terms of sickness, but then they switched me to the suppository, which although more difficult to use, iykwim, worked better, and a lot quicker.

smudgethepuppydog · 28/04/2009 17:27

DD was on them recently when she broke a rib. They made her very, very spaced out. She couldn't drive while taking them and spent most of her time laying on the sofa spouting utter rubbish at unseen figures on the wall.

I took it short term as a pain med for undiagnosed headaches...until I found out that it was not to be used for people suffering from headaches (what a great doctor I had hey?! ) But what I noticed with it was mostly as others have posted, I found it really did help with the pain, but I did have constipation, dry mouth, some dizziness and some nausea, nausea dissipated however until my body became used to it. I did feel very spacey as well, but this only last for about 24 hours, that seemed to get better as well.
I have some friends with fibro and it is quite a horrible condition, hope the tramadol is helpful for you. Just as a side note, as I had undiagnosed headaches at the time, I was having regular spinal taps to test my spinal fluid pressure. I found out that tramadol can dramtically increase spinal fluid pressure over a long period of time, so even though you said you are looking at it for a short period, it is still something to keep in mind.

Saltire · 28/04/2009 20:20

I'm not sure what to do now. I really can't be spaced out, I struggle enough with work, 2 Dses and a dog as it is, and if I was spaced out - well all hell would break out I think. DH is away so I don't even have him here for back up, so even if I took it starting on a Friday night, I would still be with the Dses over the weekend.
