Pain relief drugs of course.

I have co-codamm but it's bloody crap. My doctor is crap too so I'd like to go back and as for different pills but would like to know what the good stuff is in case he tries to fob me off iykwim.

What strength co-codamol? There are 2 different strengths with differing amounts of codeine in.

As for the good stuff? depends what sort of pain you have - some are better for some types and others for others.

The box says 30mg/500mg if that means anything to you? It doesn't to me.

It is for back pain, I have Spina Bifida.

That is the higher strength co-codamol - 500mg paracetammol and 30mg codeine - are you taking 8 in 24 hours?

Other options sre anti-inflammatories on top of co-codamol - ibuprofen/diclofenac - if you can take them?

Otherwise there are less mainstream type things that may help if there is any nerve type pain?

or you are then talking about morphine or other strong opioids.

To be honest if it a chronic (rather than short term) problem it may be worth talking about referral to a pain clinic?

Bleatblurt · 27/04/2009 09:44

I have voltarol too.
I don't take 8 in 24 hours. I worry about becoming addicted to them and also that they'd become less effective if I took them that often.

I think I'll ask my dr about about a referal to a pain clinic. It was mentioned a few years ago by my last dr but with pregnancy and house moves I just completely forgot about that option. Thanks for reminding me!

Sometimes the pain is so bad I actually throw up so I need to do something about it.

Thank you for the advice.

Paramol is the best co-codemol you can buy. it is expensive and I avoided it for a long time as I thought it was just buying a brand name, but DH got it for toothache, recommended by the pharmacist as nothing was cutting it until his dentist appt and it sorted it out like nothing else. I then used it when I pulled a back muscle.

It is slightly different form of codeine make-up and it is the strongest codeine combination you can buy over the counter.

If the pain is bad, then you can take this with ibruprofen but ideally it would be best to get a medication from the gp as it can be tailored/dose increased if your pain is severe an constant.

Thanks, pavlov.
I just looked up paramol and it says it has dihydrocodein in it. Dihydrocodein is what I had before my doctor changed it as he didn't want me being addicted to that either. I did actually prefer it to this stupid co-codamol which doesn't seem to work very well for me.

I have an appointment at the surgery today (asthma appointment AND I'm diabetic - falling apart me ) so will talk to the nurse (I like her much more than my dr) and will make a GP appointment while I'm there.

Paramol is amazing.
As is Syndol, but I'm not sure that's for back pain types...I take it for headaches.
Dp has diclofenac for his back but it wrecks his stomach.

I have been amazed by the crap pain meds they seem to have in England, all thats every prescribed is co-codamol!! What a waste of time! I take oxycodone for a chronic pain condition, but it is from home as I am a Canadian ex-pat...it works much better. When I asked my GP here if I could get it prescribed, they said they do not prescribe it unless it is for end stage cancer...I was shocked! Anyway, perhaps try your GP for oxycodone...it works really well for me

Naproxen has fixed my back problems completely

And amazingly it's sold OTC as Feminiax Ultra - apparently it has a hormonal effect too
