I was rushed into Hospital a couple of days ago with a twisted/torn Umbilical Hernia.
I am due to have the hernia repaired by key hole surgery in 3 weeks time.

What should I expect?
How long is the recoevery period?
Any do's and Don'ts?
Any advice?

I had this surgery 8wks ago - uncomfortable afterwards but not unduly painful. Managed the pain with paracetamol and ibuprofen. You have to be careful not to lift anything heavier than 10lbs for about 4-6 wks and shouldn't drive for at least 4wks. My bellybutton still looks a bit deformed - and the scar is itchy as hell - but I'm back to full fitness.

I suffered with pain in my neck and shoulders several days after surgery, but apparently they use co2 to inflate the abdomen and it can't escape, so can cause discomfort. Drink peppermint tea - it worked for me, and reduced the bloating.

Good luck

Thank you - I didn't realise recovery would be so long, I'm only taking 10 days off after the op, I may have to re-think things.

It depends on the size of the hernia - mine was quite small and consultant said that if I'd had a desk job then could be back at work within 2 weeks. You need to check with your insurance company if you drive - some companys say 4 weeks, some say longer.

I would take your consultant's advice about how long off to take - if you get full sick pay take as long off as you need. I'm self-employed as a childminder so didn't take 'sick pay' as such, but your GP won't sign you off until they think you are fit to return to work. Infact, hospital should give you a sicknote when they discharge you.
