6mo REALLY red raw skin on bottom - is this normal

6mo DD has been trying out solids for 10 days - 2 days ago started being a bit whingy and clingy and crying more than usual. the skin on her bottom was realy red - looked almost like bad sunburn and she screamed and yelled during nappy change. She seemed better today daytime but now has woken screaming again and skin is raw and bleeding in places. Called NHS direct who said it's not an emergency and will call back at 2 am. Only other info is she went swimming for 1st time on Thursday - could she have picked something up?
My feeling is maybe it's digestive / acid from tummy etc?? and related to weaning . I will stop solids and try b/f only for a few days
Anyone have experience of this? Please help

has she had a lot of fruit, the fruit acid can give them bad nappy rash my ds had this and I just slapped on loads of sudocrem and it cleared up
the other thing to try is a cream with nystatin and hydrocortisone in as she may have thrush. you can get it on prescription from the gp or hv and it is called timodine
sometimes if the nappy rash is really bad it can get infected with thrush

Wilkiepedia · 25/04/2009 20:45

What have you been weaning her with? I second what andiem says, fruit may well give her sore bum.

Metanium is AMAZING for nappy rash

floradora · 25/04/2009 20:46

She has had mainly veg not fruit. I've been putting loads of cream on which does seem to help a bit but it hasn't cleared up. It's not a rash as such as there are no spots or blotches, just really red skin, and bleeding/ weeping in places . Poor wee thing
thanks for replying so quickly

Purees of broccoli, courgette, baby rice w milk. She has licked/ sucked the odd bit of banana and a crust of bread today. I wonder about thrush as I had antibiotics from the dentist but that was over a week ago (usually I'm the one with thrush after antibiotics)

it does sound like thrush ds has had this once as well when he had bad nappy rash from too much dried fruit and then it got infected he had red raw patches
I used the timodine and put sudocream over the top
you can buy something similar over the counter canesten hc is very similar but you need to tell them it is for someone else as they won't sell it to you if they think it is for a baby

Jojay · 25/04/2009 20:50

DS1 had nasty nappy rash when he started solids too, IIRC.

Fresh air is the best thing for the weepy / bleeding bits. I covered ds's mattress with a beach towel and put him down for a nap with no nappy on and that worked a treat, or let her roll about a bit outdoors if it's warm tomorrow.

And another vote for metanium - it's fab, but you need to dry out the oozy bits first otherwise it won't stick.

andiem · 25/04/2009 20:50

it is awful flora ds screamed when I was changing his nappy and in the bath

andiem · 25/04/2009 20:51

jojay actually fresh air is the worst thing for the red bleeding bits wounds need to be moist and warm to heal not cold and dry so keeping the nappy on with cream on the sore bits is the best solution

floradora · 25/04/2009 20:53

thanks, andiem. She's fast asleep now but I have Canesten in the house so could try at next nappy change. Is metanium on prescription too Wilkiepedia? Sounds daft but I eat quite a lot of fruit/dried fruit myself... feeling totally paranoid now and DH is very worried, especially when we saw blood.

andiem · 25/04/2009 20:55

definitely try the canesten it will get better
I also gave ds some calpol to help with the soreness but am child health hcp and hate to think of the pain being untreated so may be a step too far

Wilkiepedia · 25/04/2009 20:56

Metanium is over the counter (on the shelf in most supermarkets too). It was recommended to me on here and I am a complete convert. It is bright yellow though so put a towel under her when you change her and put it on so it doesn't go onto carpet. DS rash was clear within 24 hours using this magic cream.

floradora · 25/04/2009 20:56

Jojay did you perservere or modify what you you were giving DS? It sound right about the oozy bits as the Sudocrem won't "stick" How long did it last roughly?

Flora - are you BFing? If you have been drinking lots of fresh citrus juice that could be affecting your milk and in turn upset her? I remember my friend drinking a carton of orange juice within a few hours and her LO came out in horrific nappy rash which the MW said was from the orange juice.

floradora · 25/04/2009 21:03

I am BFing and trying to eat healthily - wouldn't say I dring loads of citrus, a couple of glasses a day and I tend to dilute it as I find too much OJ too sharp. I was trying foods out in 3 day stints and she was fine on sweet potato, fine on baby rice and ok on broccoli for 2 days.. I think my head is spinning now. Thanks for all the advice though, will try the wonder creams and cuddle her lots
and look forward to NHS direct returning our call at 2 a.m.

Floradora I carried on with solids as normal, didn't modify what he was eating, but I did find that I had to do the fresh air thing, despite what andiem says - that was the turning point in it getting better. after that it was fine in a day or two.

You can get metanium in most chemists and boos, and it's great stuff.

Flightattendant25 · 25/04/2009 21:57

I don't know why she has it but it could be due to teeth,

Egg white worked for mine when all else failed. Whisk a bit up, it forms a seal and helps the wound to granulate. Everything else didn't do anything.

floradora · 26/04/2009 12:55

Thanks everyone - seems a bit better this morning. I've got some Metanium cream too so hopefully we'll see improvement

good news flora hope it is better soon

marmitebabe · 26/04/2009 16:15

Metanium is brilliant stuff.
Is baby teething? that can cause upset acid tummy too - I used Ashton & Parsons homeopathic powders on my babies, they seemed to help.
Good luck

floradora · 26/04/2009 18:18

Well we've pent the afternoon in the park with friends with the nappy off - that seems to have done some good, as does the Metanium (I keep wanting to call it meconium!)
Does anyone know why this happens? Is the "new" poo too acid or soemthing, and does she just get used to it?

I know what you mean! When I was in hospital having Ds2- I told the paed he'd just passed his first metanium nappy
