I thought I was suffering from flu (which I've had once before so I know how gruesome it is), been ill since last sunday, aches + pains, coughing up green stuff, headaches, very high temp of 103 slighly helped by paracetamol, just feeling dreadful really. But its getting worse and today my throat is agony. I'm probably being a hypocondriac but am starting to wonder if its the first stages of glandular fever. I am pretty burn out, got 2.6 ds and 7 month dd, split up with ex p at new year so I think my immune system has given up as I've had such a stressful year. Family have been helping all week so I'm not on my own.

Please either reassure me its probably not glandular fever or give me the horror stories .

Neck glands are a bit big, but not mumps sized! My mum was saying that she had glandular fever but it was a few days before the glands really puffed up which is was got me thinking.

Hopefully it is just flu after all and I'll be on the mend in a week or so. Doesn't really help having 2 dc's to look after. A good rest would help .

Mine started with horrid aches and after 24 hours had the worst sore throat in the world ever. As soon as i walked into the gps he said he would bet on gf as my neck was so swollen, glands in arm pits and tummy were also v swollen.
I had really odd tiredness as well, just completely whacked out, even cleaning teeth was knackering. Was off work for two months.

Paramol is the strongest painkiller you can get without a prescription and worked wonders for my throat.
You might have proper tonsilitus rather than gf. Get thee to the gp, antibiotics will sort the tonsilitus, gp might do a blood test at the same time as prescribing ab's because if its tonsilitus it needs treating fairly promptly, if gf the abs wont make any difference.

I had 4 months off work! With very few symptoms other than tiredness, irritability and a permanent sore throat...TBH, I was perfectly OK in myself to work, but they wouldn't let me back in case I contaminated everyone....
I never tested postive for GF, but the "nasty diseases" place I was under, said very often there are false negatives with it....

Took me one year to recover from glandular fever. Glands still swell if I'm run down.

trixiethepixie · 25/04/2009 19:53

I had flu last week and there's a lot of it doing the rounds.

From what I can rememeber about glandular fever was - really swollen glands and sore throat, so so tired, freezing but soaked in sweat, sleeping for four days without waking up.

Was off school for three months, missed loads of work and failed my A-levels because of it as it affected me for about a year where I couldn't even walk down the street without getting exhausted.

Probably just a touch of flu but the gp's can tell.

I ended up hopitalised for my glandular fever can't actually remember an awful lot about it before being admitted, just felt really really tired one day, had a headache from hell and went to lie on my mum's bed. I never woke up properly for 4 days. Couldn't eat or drink anything, couldn't stand and just wanted to sleep.

After a week my mum noticed me becomming jaundiced and took me to the out of hours doctor who immediately sent me to the hospital where I was admitted with glandular fever, hepatitis, jaundice and ulcerated tonsilitis . I was in hospital (in isolation) for 4 weeks with regular LFTs being taken and finally discharged but on the condition I went to stay with my mum and not back to my flat.

I would say it took about a year to recover from it and the fatigue was unbelievable, as I think a pp mentioned even brushing teeth was an exhausting task.

Incidentally my 3yr old ds was diagnosed in February with GF (was told it is unusual in his age group). He is still trying to regain his appetite, still having cold sweats and easily tires

Really hope for you that its flu you have, but I would see the GP and have them check if you are still feeling unwell on Monday.

nickytwotimes · 25/04/2009 20:52

You can get a blood test on Monday to check if it is GF or not.
It took me about a year to recover from GF, partly becasue I didn't give in to it in the early stages.

My brother had it and was only out of action for a month, dh was 4 mths, so it varies wildly.

The best thing is rest for any of those horrid viruses. Hopefully it isn't GF and you will be tip top in a few weeks. Glad you hve lots of help and really hope you feel better son. It is tough being poorly when t=you have got wee kids.

Do a search under countessdraculas name, she had glandular fever.

My dd had glandular fever when she was 2 and it still recurs now, 5 years later. Her main symptom was fatigue and swollen glands.

Matsikula · 29/04/2009 18:38

The weirdest symptom of my glandular fever was white spots on the inside of my throat. Also, my throat was so sore that even drinking water was painful, and I was exhausted, sweaty and very weepy (I even cried when the doctor phoned with the positive test result).

However, I was only off work for two weeks, and five years on, I have not yet had a recurrance. My aunt, a GP, prescribed me some super-strength iron tablets after I recovered, so that may have helped. If you do have it, it is not necessarily a disaster.
