Physio in SE London? For SPD

MavisG · 25/04/2009 10:56

Had all the NHS can currently give me but am still in constant pain and have limited (albeit less so) mobility so am looking to go private. So far have improved a lot (mobiity not pain) with physio's Pilates-based exercises so a similar approach would be ideal. Anyone got a recommendation?

Thank you,
Mavis

Sorry no recommendations, just some questions.

Are you still pregnant?

If you're still in pain why have the NHS discharged you?

MavisG · 25/04/2009 11:19

No, baby 4 months old. Physio's discharged me because she thinks next step is a hospital-based Pilates course, after which she thinks I'll be strong enough for a regular Pilates class. I think she can't justify keeping me on now I can walk and lift my baby - there's a waiting list.

I'm happy with most aspects of the treatment I've had from her and happy to attend the course, but she doesn't really 'get' the pain bit - she thought it would go quickly after delivery and that what remains is 'pain memory'. While I accept that pain can have psychological as well as physiological roots I disagree with her. I am frightened of having to live with this level of pain long term.

Quentin Shaw is THE man to see...women go from far and wide to be treated by him.

Kbear · 25/04/2009 11:38

where is SE London are you? Is it def phsio you need or could it be osteopathy? I know a great osteo in Bexleyheath I can recommend.

MavisG · 25/04/2009 11:43

Thanks again, but Tunbridge Wells is too far and difficult for me to get to unaided - stairs at stations are still an issue and I can't drive: does anyone have a recommendation a bit closer to SE London?

Ring Quentin and ask him for a recommendation. It is a CLASSICAL Osteopath that you need...I am in Leeds and have chatted to him at length over the phone. He is the best person to speak to, seriously.

Read this...she was out of her wheelchair after one session with him.

I live in Peckham - Bexleyheath is doable, thank you Kbear, but I don't think osteopathy's what I need, I think I need to strengthen the core muscles. I guess I'm looking for something between a physio and a personal trainer.

I could be wrong though and misalignment could be causing me problems (though the physio doesn't think so), so could you please post the details? Thanks

That was me, ilove - I mean, not actually me, but I was that incapacitated, though thankfully not for so long. I had some great treatment at the British School of Osteopathy but I just can't face being treated by a different student each week while being observed by others, not now I'm all stretchmarked and flabby (shallow, I know, but after the last year it just seems one assault too many). It didn't seem like a magic instant cure, more that they realigned me each visit, but the physio thinks alignment's fine now - my mobility is lots better, I can dress myself and care for the baby etc now, it's just that it's painful. I will ring him though, thanks.

Sorry to hear you're still suffering. My ds2 is nearly 11 months old now and while my pubic symphysis pain has finally resolved my SI joint pain is still as bad as ever.

I've started seeing a private physio here in South Wales who is helping me and I'm making very slow improvements. Core stability is the key to my problems it seems, but things have to be in good alignment before that is going to work so I have both things to work on.

As far as pain memory is concerned,it seems a little early to be talking about such things.

I really hope you find someone who can help.

MavisG · 26/04/2009 13:03

Thanks Kbear. I've made an appt with Quentin Shaw next weekend but if he suggests regular treatment I may need to find someone a bit closer to home (unless we spend every Saturday on family trips to Tunbridge Wells, though it may be worth it).

Iwish - thanks, and sorry you're still suffering, too. It's core stability that my physio's been concentrating on, too. My understanding is that the pelvis forms a ring so that symphysis is related to SI and hip pain - I find the pain is worse in different places on different days. I find the PS pain more 'icky' - fingernails-on-blackboard sort of thing, but the SI pain more debilitating (though I do live in a bungalow). Yesterday SI was bad, my husband was at work and I had to call a friend to put the baby in the pram for me, and I had to tip rather than lift him back out. Joy. Hope it clears up for you v soon.

Hope the OT can help. I had pelvic pain during my second pregnancy which thankfully gradually disappeared after dd was born. You have my sympathies.

If need be here are a couple of pages of Physio's from searching on CSP database under 'women's health', 'London'.

There's also this list of Physios registered with WPA health insurance. I used the Peckham Library postcode but you could make it more accurate with your own. It does not show their specialisms but gives you more info if you click on each physio's name.

Alternatively, could you ask your NHS physio for a recommendation? Someone in her department might do private work.

ilove, saw Quentin Shaw today. Feel relived/hopeful: what he said rang true so I'm hoping he's right that I could feel better in aboutva month. That seems amazing.

Thank you again.
