Ok he is 2 yrs old and has been coughing for 3 weeks but continuosly the last 48 hrs, he is obviouysly very tiread as he can not even sleep, the cough doesn't seem dry and according to the doctor of A&E yesterday his lungs are clear but the problem is in the esophagus. Has been having temps ranging from 38.5 to 41 since the weekend, but since yesterday afternoon he has been yo-yo-ing 38-41. Doesn't seem like a normal cold to me, obvioulsy I can give him more calpol/neurofen and continue applying wet towels or giving him baths to lower the temp but the coughing remains.... is there anything else that I can do to help him reduce the coughing ??? BTW he can't have honey because of allergies. Please if you know a way Please let me know.

hi chandra, my ds used to get very wheezy as a toddler they wouldnt diagnose asthma though until he was two. unfortunately strong history on both sides me and exH, he has excezma too despite being breast fed. my dd was bottle fed, nothing no asthma or excezma. he's adult now and still gets occaisional wheeze relieved by salbutamol(ventolin) altho he refuses to take a preventer (eg becotide)
Sadly its very common these days, might be wise if they are querying asthma, to try and reduce the dust in his room, eg vaccum daily, damp dust, reduce the amount of cuddly/soft toys etc
hope u dont mind me saying

Oh, no Strugtsu, it's OK, thank you. We are not totally sure if it is asthma but as he had chronic eczema we have tried as much as we can to keep the environment as allergen free as possible (hepa filters, specialised vacuum cleaner, changing the bed sheets every third day, removing carpets, etc. to no avail ). The thing that makes me doubt about the asthma diagnosis is that I seem to have catch the virus as well. [puzzled emoticon].

Two days on, the coughing continues, yesterday night was very scary as he seemed to be choking while coughing. I have read in another thread that it may be crup, and that it will go by itself, any ideas about how long it may take? I feel like takingit to the doctor again but I think that it's unlikelythat he gets anything for the coughing....any ideas?

Chandra - don't know if this is relevant but I'm wondering about your virus comment. DS has something called 'virally induced wheeze'. This means that every time he gets a bug/virus he starts wheezing/coughing - which has resulted in three hospital admissions to date. Again, there is no firm diagnosis of asthma but things have improved dramatically once he was finally prescribed the brown inhaler which he takes morning and night. We haven't had an episode since. Might your ds have something like that?

It sounds like you are doing everything right, but if you are ever scared in the night (or day) again about his breathing, just take him to hospital asap. Don't even hesitate!
