I have been wonring why I feel like rubbish, no sex drive, cannot lose weight even though am exercising and eating properly, shattered, acne, bloating, horrendous PMT and I ahve decided to get my coild removed, but what can I get instead?

Condoms are vile and I didn't get on with a cap, I don't want to uise anything like the pill as I was on it for years and years so would like to not have artifical hormones, but what can I do? (I can ask GP but getting an appt is such a frigging hassle )

ordinary coil?

JackBauer · 23/04/2009 20:21

Does that not have hormones? I thought the Mirena had different ones?

I'm swapping to ordinary coil (no hormones) next week I hope (for most of the side effects you give plus blurred vision and headaches. Can't think of another option (which isn't too drastic).

i thought you could get just a plain one that didn't have any/.

but i don't know too much about it so could easily be wrong!

I did specifically ask for contraception wiht no homrones at all and was recommended mirena, so am hugely pissed off that there might be something with no hormones!

Having looked briefly though it says it gives heavy periods, and mine were heavy before, so maybe they just ignnored my main request

oh blimey, was it a GP that did it?? that's really bad

JackBauer · 23/04/2009 20:38

I was 8 weeks post natal with both girls (8 week old and 20 month old) with me so admittedly wasn't lpaying a huge amount of attention, but I do remember her asking about periods as the whole reason I went on the pill 15 years ago was because of them.
but I didn;t want hormones anymore! More than no heavy periods! I did read info but obviously only on mirena as was sold it as no periods and the hormones are veyr tiny amounts so assumed it woudl be best.

Mirena is often used to the combination of contraception and helping problematic periods. Its is a small dose of hormone, but tends to mainly act on the womb lining and v little is absorbed.

A straightforward copper coil might be a good choice. They are v effective these days. Your other options are condoms, diaphragm or fertility awareness methods.

emma, you sound like you know what you're talking about! :D

i have heard that a copper coil can make periods heavier. is that right?

emma1977 · 23/04/2009 21:22

Copper coils can make your periods a bit heavier, but not everyone gets this problem.

fulltimeworkingmum · 23/04/2009 21:34

The copper coil can make periods a bit heavier and is probably not a great idea if you already have heavy periods but it is still great contraception with no hormone load. The copper coil just makes your uterus a much more hostile environment for sperm and for a fertlized egg - if it gets that far.
Mirena has a progesterone load so the lining of the uterus becomes quite thin so some women get no bleeding at all
The best bit is these devices stay effective for up to five years.
The only other non-hormonal contraceptives are barriers(condoms, caps) rhythm method, withdrawal or abstinence....none of which are exactly filled with passion!

emma1977 · 23/04/2009 21:42

Some copper coils are licensed for up to 10yrs use (e.g. T-safe), most are for 5yrs.

Some good info here

JackBauer · 23/04/2009 21:57

Hmm, I think the copper coil is the one then. I hate condoms and am too disorganised for 'family planning' methods
My periods were heavy when I was 15 but having been on the pill, then pregnant and BFing so the ones I am having now are quite heavy but bearable.
Will have a word with GP next week, will I have to go back to have it removed do you think or can they do it there and then?

it might not be cause of all my problems but I figure the hormones are the only thing that can be causing the main problems.
