If you rinse too soon you're likely to wash out the very new blood clot that will do all your healing. This will then give you what's known as a dry socket - also known as lots of soreness, inflammation and general hassle you can avoid. Give it one very gentle rinse with warm salt water to try to dislodge it and if it is just a bit annoying leave it until the morning. Try to eat on the opposite side and stick to food with no hard bits in for at least the next 3-4 days.

I'd leave it well alone.

if you rinse, you run the risk of a dry socket - not fun.

when did you have the tooth out?

my dentist said nothign at all for 4 hours, then eating/drinking ok, but not to rinse/swill out for 24 hours.

sorry, not much help really

southeastastra · 23/04/2009 20:02

ok, had it out at 3. it's only a tiny bit of scrambled egg, thought i'd be fine with that.

getting in a state looking at it. argh

that's quite recent, imo. I'd leave well alone. I had a tooth out recently, and my dentist advised to leave even salt washes until the next morning (i had mine out first thing)

southeastastra · 23/04/2009 20:07

should i not try to get it out with tweezers or anything? i'm so mad with myself should have not eaten.

No

silverfrog · 23/04/2009 20:09

god no. leave well alone. it won't do any harm staying there until tomorrow, when the clot will have had a chance to form, and then you could rinse with a salt wash/mouthwash.

one small slip with tweezers and you'll have a lot me to worry about than a bit of scrambled egg!

southeastastra · 23/04/2009 20:18

ok will go for a lie down now! thanks

hope you feel better soon.

southeastastra · 24/04/2009 13:32

it's still there. shall i still just leave it and keep trying with the salt washes?

suprised it didn't just disintegrate overnight.

Oh, I had my tooth out earlier today so I TOTALLY sympathise. Anaesthetic has finally worn off and I can sip a drink without it spilling out the other side of my mouth. I have starting popping the paracetamol though.

All this talk of dry sockets is making me feel faint.

I was told to eat a little bit of soft food - which I interpreted as meaning Jaffa Cakes. Still not quite brave enough to peer at the socket to see if any crumbs have stuck to it though.
