Accessory Navicular Bones - Extra bones in the feet!

Hiya.

Had a good look round here and I can only find one thread with anything about Accessory Navicular bones in it.

My daughter has got them in both feet and she is due to have them removed on Tuesday. She's really worried about the whole thing now and we don't really know much about the operation which isn't helping with her worries. I was hoping there was someone out there who knew something about having the accessory bones removed and the recovery time and stuff like that.

Any help would be very welcome!

Thanks.

xx

Can't help with info about the operation but my DD might have to have this done when she is a bit older so also interested in anyone elses experiences too!

My DD (10)has these extra bones in her feet too. We were referred to the podiatrist 2 years ago as she was having alot of pain in her ankles. The podiatrist we saw said she had very flat feet and the extra bones were making the muscles and tendons more unstable leading to strain and pain. He said the extra bones didn't need removing at the moment and they often fuse with the other bones in the feet by the age of 15 or so. He just took some scans of her feet and we had some special orthotics made to go in her shoes. She still has pain ocassionally but it's generally much better.

How old is your DD?

Hiya smartiejake.

She's just turned 13. We only realised there was a problem when she was 11 and they just seemed to grow really quickly over the summer holidays!

She had the orthotics made but they made no difference what so ever to the pain she was having. She was then given ankle splints to wear but they just seemed to make her more uncomfortable.

I know the operation is for the best because she's in constant pain with it now but I'm absoloutely dreading the recovery period.....a teenager stuck at home with both legs in casts! Aaargh!!!
