dh doing his first triathlon in May and am looking for advice as to whether to get him a tri suit or tri shorts and vest??

I used to do them before i had DS. I wore a trisuit but I think it depends on the individual.
The thing with shorts and vest is you could wear them for training whereas I never wore the trisuit for training as I thought I looked like a plonker in it.

greatwhiteshark · 23/04/2009 08:36

My DH wears a trisuit for events, but trains in the separate disciplines in things more appropriate for each thing IYSWIM.

eandh · 23/04/2009 08:41

thanks for quick replies dh does his training in the relevant things

he bikes to and from work in his biking gear (10miles a day!!)and he stops on way home at gym to do his swim training

runs in his running shorts and vest top thing

swims in his swimshorts (obviously)

TBH it hadnt even occured to me that he'd need anything else but it dawned on me this morning that he won't be able to change after each event his sister is doing same event and she has gone for a tri suit but think the shorts/vets may be better option. Had a look on ebay but they are all expensive any ideas where to get a cheapish one?

oh and trying to explain to him that I am not getting the dds and I up at 5am to go with him and watch him as I'll be left to deal with them being stroppy and tired but he's ot quite getting that yet!!

ShowOfHands · 23/04/2009 08:45

Go. It's great fun! Try wiggle for a tri-suit.

DH a triathlete.

eandh · 23/04/2009 08:51

he's doing one in brighton in spetember and I said we'd got to that one as I'll book us a travelodge for the saturday night and can appear at start time howver the one in May is an hours drive away and he'll need the car to go earlier so we cant get there unless we leave with him.

Thanks for tip about wiggle am off to google now

Ps BIL and I were laughing about how athletic dh and his sister are, we were destined to be bil/sil as we'd both prefer to sit down and have a bacon bap

eandh actually I would second go and watching, firstly because if it's his first one it's lovely to have someone in the crowd cheering you on and secondly most triathletes and the people who support them are really friendly and it's a fun morning out.

P.S Tell him to train at least once in what he is going to wear to ensure it's comfortable (or at least not chaffing!)

Twink · 23/04/2009 09:40

It's great to have support, makes my day when I come into transition and someone's there smiling and shouting!

Wiggle are great. Consider getting your dh a tube of 'Bodyglide'. It's quite £ but fantastic for stopping chafing, and lasts ages (had mine 4 years). Unless he's really keen, he won't have tried cycling when wet so won't know which bits will rub...

I have tri shorts & top as I use them for training and like Libra, never fancied training in a full suit. Again I've had them ages so price per wear isn't bad.

mychildrenarebarmy · 23/04/2009 09:41

eandh my DH is also doing his first triathlon in May. I am with you and your bil, lol.

ShowOfHands · 23/04/2009 09:54

Oh the joy you have coming to you. Staggering downstairs at 7am to find your dh slathering his naked bits and cycle shorts in chamois creams and lube.

Triathlon is not for the faint hearted wife.

ShowOfHands · 23/04/2009 09:54

Which ones is he doing?

eandh · 23/04/2009 11:06

lol at some of teh comments - he was self training until November but joined local gym in January (sadly his Nan passed away before Xmas but the inheritance she left us made the gym possible) he has one to one training with the triathlon coach there once a week and has his regime up on the fridge (he is obsessed with what he eats now and making me feel I should be doing something more active as got a bit more lardy after the dd's!!)

He is doing the East grinsted tri on 17th May and one in brighton in spetember (cant remember the weekend but did warn him if iot was the 6th he couldnt do it as dd1 5th birthday and 1st day at school on the 7th and want a relaxing weekend!)

showofhands hmmm that doesnt sound taht appealing

mychildren glad we have another one in our club (honestly me and dh are complete opposites regarding exercise )

libra thanks for the tips will pass them onto dh when he gets home

The funny thing is I think dd1 (shes the 4 year old) will be into this as she goes running with him on sunday mornings and can do about 3/4 mile easily, she tags along on teh more gentle bike rides and again dh says she keeps up and she starts swimming lessons later this year so I have visions of them doing this together, dd2 is more like me but shes only just 2 and cant ride a bike yet!!!!

oh he wanted to do the london tri and at my work they have a team (work for santander) so waiting to see if he has been allocated a place for that as well

OP posts:
smudgethepuppydog · 23/04/2009 18:31

DD would say it depends on whether the swim is open water or not and if it is are you wearing a wet suit? If wearing a wetsuit a one piece trisuit is much more likely to stay in place as you run and remove your wetsuit in transition.

We used to get DD's trisuits from shops at events.

Flibbertyjibbet · 23/04/2009 18:47

I did. Is it an open water swim?

Its a few years since I completed the north west championship at the Isle of Man but most of the men I knew from training/swimming wore speedos for the swim whether under wet suit outdoor or on their own indoor, and just pulled vest on at transition.

Those tri suits are really naff looking imo.

Myself I wore full swimsuit for the swim and pulled on cycling shorts.

Don't miss all that one bit but am teaching ds's to swim and won't mind if they get into it.

No bud I am doing a Quadathron this summer and am currently wondering about my sanity...

Good luck to your DH!

gomez · 23/04/2009 18:51

bud eh??

but

smudgethepuppydog · 23/04/2009 18:58

What's a Quadrathron?

gomez · 23/04/2009 19:01

Here:

www.artemisgreatkindrochit.com/

Seemed a good idea at the time!

eandh · 23/04/2009 19:11

wow gomez I'll hide that from dh!

Am bidding on a brand new short/vest set on ebay am winning it for £11 at the mo (dh has a slim frame so needs a small and it appears medium/large go for higher prices)

Him and his sister are constantly texting/ringing each other updating training plans etc pil's are going to go to the east grinsted race so may be able to tag a lift with them and go (probably leave dd2 at my parents as she is into wandering off and then I'll get all stressed)

Thought we'd have to get a bike rack to get bike there and back but friends dh says he has one that we can borrow for the time being

OP posts:
smudgethepuppydog · 23/04/2009 19:28

Oh I am so, so hiding that from DD. I used to be a slalom canoeist in my day and she's always banging on about getting in a boat and having a go. She would absolutely love that event.

Good luck with the ebay auction!

gomez · 23/04/2009 19:33

Ah Smudge I was a paddler too, back in the day .

These are sit-on Malibus however so not quite as much fun.

Fairly sure the Quad won't be fun either!

smudgethepuppydog · 23/04/2009 19:38

Sit-on's were ok in the surf I seem to recall (but that could just be rose coloured mamories) but I don't think I'd fancy them on any kind of river.

The cycling bit is enough to put me off any kind of tri event.

Good luck with the Quad, I'd love to hear how you get on.

smudgethepuppydog · 23/04/2009 19:40

mamories! - memories even, it's been a bloody long day at work.

gomez · 23/04/2009 19:53

I will let you know if I survive!

[Less said about mammaries the better I am fairly sure I could actually sit on mine..]
