I am going in for big tooth work when I am 17 weeks. Scared.

Is there anything I can take more than paracetamol??

What would taking one dose (2 tablets) of syndol do to me/baby etc?!!??!

Hi, i would speak to your Dr as i believe most medicines need to be avoided.

I have had 2 teeth out including a wisdom tooth whilst pregnant and coped ok on paracetamol tbh

Isn't Syndol a migrane remedy?

Good luck x

BeehiveBaby · 22/04/2009 23:05

What did you have for the procedure Heeby?!

BeehiveBaby · 22/04/2009 23:06

If you don't mind me asking....sorry to gatecrash. I need a bottom wisdom tooth out, but am TT(A)C.

For OP:

Use of ibuprofen
Ibuprofen is one of a group of medicines known as the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). These medicines are used to help relieve pain and inflammation. Ibuprofen may be taken when pregnant, if it's recommended by your GP, or midwife, and you're in the first 30 weeks of pregnancy.

If treatment with ibuprofen is considered necessary, you should take it at the standard recommended dose, unless you're advised otherwise by your healthcare professional. As with any medicine taken during pregnancy, use ibuprofen at the lowest effective dose for the shortest possible time.

In certain conditions, ibuprofen may be taken after the first 30 weeks of pregnancy, but this is always under the advice of a doctor, as you and your baby will need to be monitored regularly.

(from NHS website)

I always have found ibuprofen best for tooth pain.

Flamesparrow · 23/04/2009 07:53

Syndol was mainly because it knocks me out so I know one dose would get me through the main of the pain iyswim.

The last attempt at this tooth went wrong, leaving me in a hell of a lot of pain which is why I am so scared because just paracetamol and ibuprofen did nothing last time.

Will go to the GP and check the ibuprofen is ok too (on anti-emetics so should probably check nothing will clash tbh!)

in all seriousness, can they give you some gas and air???

don't dentists use it?

deffo check with your GP - poor you but the anticipation is often worse than the actual procedure

Flamesparrow · 23/04/2009 08:05

They can still numb the actual thing, tis just the afterwardsness iyswim.

I know that logically this time it will be fine. It is being done by a dental surgeon. But the dentist told me it would be done under general and have to be sort of drilled/cut out (root fused to bone), and the surgeon says it is a 20 min local thing I had it in my head for next January-ish, some nice person putting me to sleep, waking up and it being done.

aw Flame - local anaesthetic is v good

better to get it done i guess than wait another few months

Heebychick · 23/04/2009 09:18

beehive i had to have a top wisdom tooth out, i didn't know beforehand just went to the dentist with a slight toothache and he told me my wisdom tooth was infected and he'd 'whip' it out for me there and then .... probably good job i didn't have time to think about it in hindsight. I had 3 injections and he made sure i was totally numb before doing it and then manuvoured (SP?) it for a while and then pulled, it all took around 15 minutes and i honestly didn't feel a thing - one of the lucky ones where it was a simple proceedure.

I then went back to work afterwards (lots of brownie points awarded!) and didn't need any painkillers, i'm not tough or anything at all and used to be petrified about dentists - but i guess after 2 days of labour anything is achievable now!

Good luck with yours, and i hope the ibuprofen is deemed ok flame

Another thought, i have SPD and my Dr gave me some Co-Dydramol which knocks me out totally and it's safe to use so maybe a codine thing would help too?

BeehiveBaby · 23/04/2009 15:39

Thanks, Heeby. Mine is on the bottom, so a hospital jobby, assuming it is even possible while preggers.

Heebychick · 23/04/2009 20:24

Ooh ouch, i'm not sure but if it needs doing good luck! yuk xx

emma1977 · 23/04/2009 21:20

Safe in pregnancy: Paracetamol, codeine, tramadol, pethidine, gas and air

Potentially harmful: Aspirin, Ibuprofen, other NSAIDs.

dizietsma · 23/04/2009 21:28

DON'T DO IT!

I had an extraction at 20 weeks, it got infected and the recovery was so painful. I was taking just paracetamol and remember calling NHS 24 in tears begging them to tell me there was another painkiller I could take. They didn't, although I'm pretty sure I could've taken co-codamol. So I suffered a loooooong night and had to have an emergency appointment on a Sunday.

If you can put it off until post-natal period, then do, is my advice.
