Smear results: how much info in letter?

Just wondering what information do you get when you receive your smear test results? If you are not clear, does it tell you if you are CIN 1,2 or 3? Does it depend which health authority you are in? Does your GP get a more detailed report and if so, does s/he receive it before you do?

At our surgery we do not give more than basic info if an "inadequate" specimen. WOuld you want to know that it was smeared with blood rather than not enough sample??

If minor abnormality, we say what the lab report is "borderline changes" etc, enclose a leaflet and repeat in 6 months.

If colposcopy is required, a leaflet and letter with more info is sent, and the Pt can always speak to the GP, but I don't think the letter states what CIN grade - why worry too much, and the hospital consultant will explain more.

Hi mulamum
If you have a look at the NHS cervical screening [www.cancerscreening.nhs.uk/cervical website] on the top right hand side there's a link to publications, the list of publications includes one (can't remember the number off the top of my head sorry) which gives guidance about what information should be included in letters and suggested formats.
It does vary between areas depending on local agreements about who sends the letters out but IIRC the national guidance says that if it's an abnormal result then the grade should be given, and the appropriate infomation leaflet included.

Thank you both
