Is it healthy to be losing weight in pregnancy just through healthy eating?

First of all, i dont know if this is the right category for this.

Im overweight and so ive decided to eat lots more healthy foods, homemade veg soups, tuna-pasta salad, etc and thinkin bout joining a gym but i think i mite be pregnant, so (just in case, thats why i havent joined the gym yet), if i am and i still eat all this healthy stuff n take moderate, safe exercise then i should lose weight, but would that be safe? Surely it would be more safe than being an even more overweight mummmy than i already am?

I put on 3 stone with my DS, who is now 2.6 and really, really dont want to do that again.

Someone please help me?

Thanks

You can and it can be a good idea if you are incrediably overweight.

But it needs to be done slightly differently to a standard diet and it will need to be monitored by your midwife.

For just healthy eating (rather than a calorie restricted diet) then it'll be fine.

Thanks TheArmadillo, we'll wait and see then! x

I am significantly overweight and was told to try to maintain my weight through pregnancy (which is an effective loss) by midwives / dietician.

did you do any exercise chairmummiaow or was it just through healthy eating?

I was dieting till I got a BFP at Easter - have put on 4lb since then somehow - I guess a combination of water weight and (only) a couple of Easter eggs as I'm now 5 weeks and bloating up like a whale.

I asked my GP this morning about healthy diet / not putting on weight / even losing weight during pregnancy as, having been dieting for so long, I am struggling to get my head round what constitutes normal eating.

She said not to worry too much, as the baby will take what it needs - has suggested cereal for brekkie, salad for lunch, low fat yoghurt and fruit for snacks and a balanced dinner with lots of veg - all just sensible really. I think the challenge is trying to ignore the call of the carbs when the nausea hits and hope a banana works as well !

As for exercise - they do say you shouldn't start stuff when PG, so I will carry on with y aerobics etc but if you haven't done cardio exercise recently, I'd stick with long walks / swimming etc.

santa - I didn't manage to maintain my weight (but was only half a stone different straight after DS's birth so not too bad!)

I was exhausted for the first trimester so got out of the habit of exercising, but continued to walk plenty etc. From what I read you can do anything pretty much anything you normally do, so long as you don't get too hot.

For my next pregnancy (not yet!) I would stick to healthy eating and fast walking / aqua aerobics etc
