Had a nasty bout of conjunctivitis begining of March. Had 3 courses of ABs and every time I stopped it bounced back as bad as ever. The last time was at teh weekend - so no GPs and was improving significantly by Monday morning so decided to let it run it's course.

In the meantime I have had a coldsore. I am pretty sure I have now transferred it to my eye. It is itchier than ever. Feels like I have got shampoo in it - even feels as though I may have scratched in in the corner. It was worse last night when I closed my eye to go to sleep. When I look closely I think I can see a small lesion/blister on the pink fleshy bit near the bridge of my nose.

Oh Joy. I guess I will have this for the rest of my life.

No I would use it on her thumb again without question - just not in eye (it was originally prescribed for a combined staph/herpes infection along with ABs for the staph so it would be really bad news to go in eyes IYSWIM.

Just to echo what Daisy said SMS, opticians can diagnose all sorts of problems with eyes. I was suffering for several weeks with what I thought were recurrent eye infections and kept being told by my (useless) gp to use off the shelf eye drops. I did, but there was no improvement at all (had sore, red stinging eyes). Eventually popped into my local opticians and couldn't believe the range of technology they have (they can see the back of the eye, even inside the eye, amazing!)the optician immediately knew what my problem was and wrote me a referral letter for my local eye hospital. In my experience GPs are useless when it comes to anything to do with eyes.

Ah yes, good point.

SMS - would you be able to talk to CantSleepWontSleep about herpes - her DS has lots of spots and she isn't sure if he has it, but DS's was confined to his mouth/lips rather than his body and I had a feeling your DD was body.

SlightlyMadStirrup · 25/04/2009 17:30

My DD seems to have been everywhere at some point...will look for the thread...

not sure if she has a thread going, if not post natal feb 06 will have her on

SlightlyMadStirrup · 25/04/2009 17:35

Oh OK...I can't CAT though. If you give her a shout I can talk to her on this thread if she wants. Just had a look at Feb 08 and could see no ref to this. Is she keeping it off the board - if so I could let her have my email.

HAppy Birthday to your DD SMS

I'm going to throw in a complete wide ball here SMS, but as it sounds like your DD has had other herpes related problems and the fact that the GP is saying this is eczema......is there a possibility she might be reacting to gluten? There is a condition called dermatitis herpetiformis that is caused by gluten intolerance and often goes hand in hand with coeliac disease and is often mistaken for herpes.

I have always had skin problems and had a really nasty bout of it years ago before I was diagnosed coealic. At the time I was told it was herpes simplex and given aciclovir tablets and had recurrent bouts for years afterwards. It wasn't until after the coeliac diagnosis four years ago that it cleared up and my GP put two and two together. I've not had a bother with it since.

SlightlyMadStirrup · 25/04/2009 19:57

No I don't think so.

My DD had her primary (and only - but very severe) herpes infection immediately following a coldsore I had. Her sympoms were classic - and systemic (as flame will testify - flameboy also had it and flame helped me through the very traumatic time) and did not initially involve her skin at all. As she is a thumb sucker and has broken skin on her thumb she transferred the virus to her thumb. She has been fine since - until now. She has no other skin complaints - no evidence of excema dry skin nothing at all which is why I am very at GPs diagnosis of ezcema for a tiny patch about 2mm by 4mm on her eyelid.
