How long for a broken toe to heal?

Thunderduck · 16/04/2009 18:06

I think I've broken my toe, well it certainly feels like it,and it looks rather mangled.

I know there's little point in bothering the dr but is there anything I can do to help relieve the pain, besides painkillers. I can barely walk. I'm shuffling around like Igor from Frankenstein.

And how long will it take to heal?

TIA.

I broke my big toe last year. 2 weeks till it was ok without pain killers. about 4 to 5 till it was back to normal. Good luck

Thunderduck · 16/04/2009 21:33

Thankyou very much. That long? I'm so pathetic. It's been just a few days and it's driving me crazy.

Go to A&E, they will x-ray it and decide whether they can do stuff (ie, operate and put in some pins to help it to heal). Go, go on, off you go. Let them sort it out, not mumsnet folk.

Thunderduck · 16/04/2009 21:45

Everything I've read. Dr's sites and all said that there is little they can do, so there is no point in going.

If it doesn't improve soon I may do so though.

I've seen them pin toes, it depends on what you've broken. It'll take a bloody long time to heal if you leave it like this to be honest. I really would go and get it checked. It may need a bit of a tug to get the bones into place then it will all be fine. If you leave it then you risk permanent damage that can't be fixed with a slight tug.
Go on, let them look at it.

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 16/04/2009 22:03

Don't you just love MN names becuse now I get the chance to say in all seriousness, "yes, fluffy bunny is right".

Seriously, listen to her, I think I broke some bones in my foot and was still getting pain a year later. Let the dr be the judge as to whether it's not worth bothering them. Especially if it looks mangled.

2jamsandwiches · 16/04/2009 22:03

I had my toe xrayed, dr said it couldn't be broken, I wouldn't be able to walk on it - guess what, it was broken.
Advice was to strap it tightly, with micropore and padding if necessary/comfortable to the toes next door - made it much easier to hobble about.
I felt as if I'd never walk without pain again - was weeks not days, but healed fine.

FluffyBunnyGoneBad · 16/04/2009 22:05

I may keep it for occasions like this!

I'm a student radiographer, I've seen a few bones and feet! Please go, let them judge if it should be left or not. I half know what I'm doing

FluffyBunnyGoneBad · 16/04/2009 22:07

If it's mangled then it will more then likely need manipulating to put the bones in the correct place so they can heal or it may need just a simple manipulation as there may not be any fractures.

Radiographers like x-rays like this. Seriously!!!

Thunderduck · 16/04/2009 22:08

OK I'll go then..sulks. It's just that I've spent the past 6 weeks going from hospital to dr to nurse to hospital and I'm tired of it. But if I must I'll go.

FluffyBunnyGoneBad · 16/04/2009 22:10

Ta. I hope it's OK. Let me know or I'll be up all night worrying.

Thunderduck · 16/04/2009 22:12

LMAO. I'll go to the dr asap. I'd rather avoid the hospital if possible. No transport anyway to get there. I don't drive and dp is on painkillers and sleeping pills recovering from his injuries, so he can't take me.

FluffyBunnyGoneBad · 16/04/2009 22:14

Cor blimey, your doctor's good if they have x-ray vision!

He'll just send you to A&E dear. Can you get a cab? A neighbour? Family? friend?

Thunderduck · 16/04/2009 22:15

I'll call my mother, perhaps she'll take me. I was rather hoping to go to the dr and he'd say oh no need to go to hospital, you can treat it yourself.

You are a mean bunny!.

OP posts:
FluffyBunnyGoneBad · 16/04/2009 22:17

He may say that if he could see bone/the x-ray.

I am mean. It's the PMT!

Thunderduck · 16/04/2009 22:20

Well it wouldn't surprise me actually if he did say that, after all when I had what turned out to be an asthma attack, I was told by the hospital dr that I could have either asthma or a blood clot.
He didn't bother doing a blood test just sent me home with a possible blood clot and no advice or medication

I should ask you again when you don't have PMT but yes I'll go as soon as I can get transport.

OP posts:
FluffyBunnyGoneBad · 16/04/2009 22:34

It's OK. I am nice really.

Asthma/blood clot is one hell of a difference. Hmm. Odd doctor.

I do still say go and let them check it. It may just need a tug, you can slip the bones in the toe out of place. The treatment's quick an easy. Beats being permanently having a manky toe!

Thunderduck · 16/04/2009 22:37

I will go. Thankyou very much for the advice. heres a carrot for you.

FluffyBunnyGoneBad · 16/04/2009 22:38

Dipped in chocolate?

Ta. I hope it's easily sorted. They may do nothing but it's not worth leaving.

Thunderduck · 16/04/2009 22:40

Of course it's dipped in chocolate! Would I give you anything but the best?
