Hello -

About an hour ago I was diagnosed with early Osteo.

They say nothing medical can be done (am surprised) but recommended buying some Glucosomine from health shop. Has anyone tried this for Oste.? and if so did you notice any difference?

TIA

Glucosamine with chondroitin can have beneficial effects in early osteoarthritis. Be careful of it if you are allergic to shellfish or vegan, as the vast majority of the products are extracted from shellfish.

Get the one with chondroitin as well because it is supposed to help rebuild the cartilage. I have family who have benefited from using it.

There is nothing that the medics can do for you until your joints are so buggered that you need replacements, apart from give you painkillers and anti-inflammatories.

You might want to consider other anti-inflammatory options as well - tart cherry juice for example has good results in inflammatory joint conditions - this is one type

Ditto everything that thumbwitch has said.

Literally the only medical intervention you can get (other than pain reliefe - which TBH isn't actually that great) is joint replacement.

Thanks so much for that

They have recommended investing in a treadmill as walking is said to be good but sometimes I have difficulty even getting into the car to get to the park!!

take it easy though - too much exercise can be just as bad as too little exercise.

SlightlyMadStirrup · 16/04/2009 11:57

I was about to say that - I think swimming/walking in water is supposed to be good as it supports the weight of your body whilst alllowing you to move.

The problem is - one of the main causes of OA is physical wer and tear on teh joints through excessive/inappropriate excercise or being overweight and having to carry the extra weight. It really is (or at least starts as) a wear and tear disease - and too much/inappropriate excercise is going to add to teh burden

Hi -

I have always had trouble with the same knee, since about 6 years old!

I have had two arthroscopies and they say wear and tear and also chondromolacia patella.

Either way, the pain right now is excruciating

Am starting physio therapy in May - don't know what they expect to achieve but sure I'll give it a go!
