Sprained ankle...do I need to have it looked at?

I 'went over' on my ankle in the garden this afternoon, wearing shoes that had 2 inch wedges!
It is only a little swollen, but extremely painful.
I can technically walk...in that I can physically get about without collapsing, but it is extremely painful to put weight on, or even just to bend. Ive done the ice thing, and currently have it elevated.
I've taken Ibuprofen which relieved it for a bit, and paracetamol which doesn't seem to have touched it.

Anyone know whether I need to go to A&E?

I'd go to A&E. If you went over (foot inverted so toes went inwards towards the other foot) then it's possible to fracture the malleolus at the base of the tib/fib. Best to get it checked. There's a few tendons there, if they tear or come off the bones then they need sorting out pronto. Best to go and check.

Up to you. Personally I'd wait until tomorrow morning and then go to minor injuries if you still feel the need. They can xray it then if they think it's necessary. I'd take arnica, and ibuprofen and paracetamol in rotation. Protect Rest Ice Compress Elevation (they don't say Compress any more because people would squash it too hard but a tubigrip might help).

Thanks fluffybunny! I might go. It's the fact that there isn't much swelling that makes me think I must be overreacting.

worth having it checked just in case - I know of someone who broke their ankle ice-skating but didn't go to have it checked for ages because they could still "technically walk" on it as well. You could do lasting damage to it by not having it checked (if it were more than a sprain)

Sorry, x post missing. Do you think a tubigrip would help?

I've x-rayed some nasty, swollen feet and ankles, They look broken in a big way but rarely are. I've also x-rayed some that look fine but are clearly fractured when the film comes up. You really can never tell. It's best to check. Ligaments are pinned on to the bone so if you pull one off, it'll hurt and will need fixing back. It's always best to get it checked.

If they think it will help then let them do this at the hospital.

Keep off the evil shoes dear!

I won't be wearing them again! They're still in the garden I think.

I've bought some lovely high heels for my DS2's christening this weekend!

Oh dear. Off to A&E, go on. Let them take a look

abbierhodes · 15/04/2009 00:01

Thanks for the advice. I'm going to wait till morning, save dragging anyone out of bed to mind DCs. If I still can't walk by then I'll know I'm not just being a wimp!

I hope it's OK.

FluffyBunnyGoneBad · 16/04/2009 00:49

Is it OK?
