Wouldn't normally panic or worry but ds complained of pain last night (middle of tummy) he then started being violently sick around midnight and hasn't really stopped since. Hasn't managed to keep anything down, including water. He was also complaining of a stiff neck earlier. I put this into NHS direct and it said call an ambulance immediately Dh needless to say says absolutely no.

We are on holiday in a cottage in Cornwall. I have 2 ds's 17 months and 5 and I am 7 months prgt. I'm not insured on the car as it's a hire car for the week. I have a washing machine so can keep the children clean and some food in the house (enough for tomorrow -nearest shop 5 miles? Can't walk there as dh can't look after the children and aren't insured on the car) but are needing to sleep in with the children as I don't want dh (nor does he) to pass it on to any of us.

I want to go home but that involves a 5hr drive.

Any advice?

Not sure what to do and are starting to panic as dh still looks green...

i would let a&e see his if he's got a stiff neck and being sick.

mrsturnip · 12/04/2009 20:39

Is it ds or dh being sick?

Can they touch their chin to their neck (iyswim). If not ambulance right away.

I wouldn't go home as you'll pass it on in the car.

Taxi to shops and back. Dh can look after kids for that long (babe in cot, older child in front of DVD, or take babe with you)

DarrellRivers · 12/04/2009 20:40

Does he have a fever?

Habbibu · 12/04/2009 20:41

Call NHS direct, and get your DH to talk to them - they may be able to convince him to get help if they think he needs it - he may believe them more, iyswim?

DarrellRivers · 12/04/2009 20:41

Does he still have abdominal pain?
Where is it , if he does, and does it come and go, or is it constant?

muppetgirl · 12/04/2009 20:41

Thanks for replying, he's now telling me his neck doesn't hurt anymore (I stupidly asked him) but as he's a man I'm not sure what to believe!

OP posts:
muppetgirl · 12/04/2009 20:45

no fever, yes to headache no to neck pain now (I wish I hadn't asked him)

Thanks for the taxi solution -I am so crap at the moment I couldn't think if I needed to.

He could do eldest but I would take youngest as he's picked up on stress/worry and is being a bit of a twit.

How long is too long when you are vomitting bearing in mind he's not eaten for over 24 hrs and not kept water down since before midnight last night..

OP posts:
mrsturnip · 12/04/2009 20:45

Tell him to touch his chin to his neck (so a deep nod).

mrsturnip · 12/04/2009 20:47

Put some sugar in the water (just a tsp). If you get really low on sugars then plain water will make you vomit. If you go to a chemists tomorrow you could get some dioralyte.

Which bit of Cornwall are you in? (near which major town?)

muppetgirl · 12/04/2009 20:47

he can do the deep nod

he's off to bed now

he's walking talking etc, but very green. Can't be something he ate as we all shared the food yesterday with ds 2 and we're all fine...

OP posts:
muppetgirl · 12/04/2009 20:48

we're near Hayle

OP posts:
mrsturnip · 12/04/2009 20:48

if it's not the food, keep away from him! Last thing you want is to get it!

mrsturnip · 12/04/2009 20:49

Oh Hayle no good (I know a few people who own cottages in Cornwall, if it had been one of those I would have emailed them to ask whether they were going shopping and could pick some stuff up in a cheeky sort of way ) but I don't know anyone in Hayle. Sorry!

DarrellRivers · 12/04/2009 20:50

Good he has no fever.
Dehydration is more difficult to assess over the web
Pulse rate is one way of assessing....
Keep sipping water slowly and what about phoning the local Out of hours to the holiday cottage to see how you might be able to access some buccastem

DarrellRivers · 12/04/2009 20:51

Hope he feels better soon
Always worrying when you are away from your normal support network

CMOTdibbler · 12/04/2009 20:53

He needs to get some fluids in - make up some rehydration solution ( 1 litre of warm boiled water, 8 level teaspoons of sugar, and 1 level teaspoon of salt) and then get him to have one teaspoon every few minutes. No more, else he'll chuck it back up, but it will be absorbed and it mounts up

Lots of handwashing after contact and toilet to make sure you don't get it too.

muppetgirl · 12/04/2009 20:53

not going to sleep in with him (I did last night as didn't really realise what was wrong) am in with the boys as the second bedroom has 2 singles and ds 2 is in his travel cot.

we're here till friday

OP posts:
muppetgirl · 12/04/2009 20:56

he is a bugger for not handwashing which awlays drives me mad. I am washing the loo each time he's sick as we have some antbacterial wipes (found in the cupboard)

Just want to go home

I can keep him in a room and he can use a separate loo and I can so loads of washing but here I am feeling a little panicked and trapped.

hotpasty · 12/04/2009 21:10

There is a Boots chemist open tomorrow from 9am at the small shopping mall on the roundabout off the A30 just before Hayle - the one that has a Next, Costa & M&S. (There's a Brewers Fayre Pub off the same roundabout). Not sure how far that is from you - might you be able to get there for some advice/dioralyte tomorrow morning?

oopsagain · 12/04/2009 21:13

this happened to us a couple of yrs ago

Poor Dh was soo ill.

He souldn't go far from toilet IYSwim.
I wasn't pg but had a 1yr old and a 3yr old.

it was hard

But we stayed and when he was feeling better we did have a small bit of fun.

Am feeling your pain!!

muppetgirl · 12/04/2009 21:16

hotpasty -Yes! I remember it it said something like Night boots on it when we went past (we cracked a joke about having driven 5hrs to see and m&S and next etc etc...)

Will pop there in a taxi if I can't get hold of the hire company.

How does car seats in taxis work? I take ds sits on my lap?
(am I being a bit dim now?

OP posts:
JRocks · 12/04/2009 21:19

You don't have to have a car seat in a taxi.

I'm not sure that the Boots in Hayle is open, it didn't look it when we drove past earlier. I'd go for you but am stuck in myself, sorry

alipiggie · 12/04/2009 21:21

muppetgirl, sounds like just what my ds1 had a couple of weeks ago. Started with severe stomach ache, headache then violent vomiting. My next guess is your DH will get diarrhea. The vomiting will stop though. Should all be finished in 48 hrs max. Sorry it's not better news but just get him to drink sips of water and keep washing your hands. I didn't get it and both my two were sick .

hotpasty · 12/04/2009 21:24

Muppetgirl/JRocks - the chemist is definitely shut at the moment as I checked on the web. Nothing seems to be open tonight but it will be open tomorrow morning.

cariboo · 12/04/2009 21:29

This works with dc & recommended by paed: ice-cold water drunk by teaspoonful. Such a small amount & v.cold isn't usually vomited. Sorry can't be of more use!
