I do apologise in advance for the grossness of this post. I think I bit my lip, or maybe the ulcer was there, and then I bit it, made it worse, not sure which. Anyway, on the edge of my lip, just inside, had an ulcer for over a week, started off relatively small, with a tiny one near it, it has grown and grown, not helpd by being bitten twice as it is inflamed, gone from being white and round to now more raggedy and yellow and joined the other one.

I have tried baby orajel (like v strong bonjela) and salt on it. Been cleaning teeth and gargling, but gargles don't really touch it because of location.

It is sore, hard to kiss DH or DD, becoming difficult to eat. HELP ME GET RID OF IT, it is gross!

sounds like it might be infected pav.
i think yellow isn't good.
can you call nhsdirect?

pavlovthepregnantcat · 12/04/2009 09:05

dragon - yes I think so too. It is in the most awkward place that is the problem. I am not going to all NHS direct though, they will send me to hospital in an ambulance due to risk of serious infection .

I swear by Rinstead oral gel which you can only buy over the counter and is stronger than bonjela-type stuff. It might be worth a trip to the doctor though if it doesn't shift in the next day or two.

nevergoogledragonbutter · 12/04/2009 09:08

you're probably right.
see your GP on tuesday.

pavlovthepregnantcat · 12/04/2009 10:05

God why do things happen when the shops are shut?!!

I put some salt on it. Fucking killed, and now its nice and numb. I am going on the logic that salt mouthwashes are good for ulcers, but wont help with the location, so put it on neat, and will probably find I am making it much worse by doing it!

I will get some rinstead tomorrow, give it a try. Orajel works fine for pain relief, apart from also numbing my tongue and cheek! But wears off too quickly .

You would not think something so small can hurt so much!

OP posts:
nevergoogledragonbutter · 12/04/2009 23:45

any better?

are you sure the salt is a good idea?

KatyMac · 12/04/2009 23:50

Salt is fine (but it hurts)
Salt & vinegar crisps are good (ditto)

Difflam spray (ITC) works on most of them

Adcortal in oral base is good too but that might be prescription only I can't remember

FluffyBunnyGoneBad · 12/04/2009 23:51

Try some corsodyl mouthwash from the chemist. I had a tooth taken out last year and was left with a few from all the bashing, it really helped and they were gone in a few days.

KatyMac · 12/04/2009 23:52

Be careful with corsadyl it can make ulsers worse for some people

ComeOeufeneer · 12/04/2009 23:53

Bonjela have started a new treatment (called bonjela once) you can get it in sainsburys and most chemists. Expensive but really really effective.

pavlovthepregnantcat · 13/04/2009 10:01

Well, it is a little bigger again, and hurts like hell, but it does not appear to be yellow any more .

Maybe the the salt has helped slowly? I know it hurt but it was sort of cathartic!!!
Its just really weird, it is only one, nothing else going on, I guess it must have got infected when I bit it.

You can buy some stuff in a little bottle called Anbesol then just dab it on. It will hurt like crazy when you apply it but will then go numb. It has both an antiseptic and anesthetic effect so really does the job. You can also use it on teething babies should you feel the need

pavlovthepregnantcat · 13/04/2009 10:07

Oh Anbesol, yes used this for DD when she was teething. It worked relatively well until I found Orajel which was like magic!

Do you recommend the gel or the liquid?

OP posts:
Northernlurker · 13/04/2009 10:22

I've only ever used the liquid and i think it's best for ulcers because it can't avoid hitting the spot (owwwww) whereas gel can be a bit hit and miss ime.

dearprudence · 13/04/2009 10:28

Adcortyl in orabase is available over-the-counter at chemists. It's a sticky gel thing that actually stays on the ulcer, so nothing can get in and make it hurt. It feels really weird in your mouth though.

I thought Anbesol was for piles

nevergoogledragonbutter · 13/04/2009 11:38

well you can put it on your piles then too pav.

two birds?

pavlovthepregnantcat · 13/04/2009 11:41

I might get those too this pg eh? as dragon says two birds.. [wince]!!

You can buy Corlan tablets from the pharmacy (about £4) and they actively treat ulcers. You put them on the ulcer and let them dissolve - hurts like hell and tastes very bitter but not for too long. I once had the ulcer from hell and went to the doctor, and this is what he prescribed, but he also told me to buy them direct and not pay the prescription charge. They work instantly and the ulcer should be gone within a couple of days.

It's a subject close to my heart because I caused two huge ulcers a couple of days ago when I slipped whilst brushing my teeth [ouch] but I can't take the corlan this time as I am breast feeding

pavlovthepregnantcat · 13/04/2009 12:04

lady - can i take it while pg if you cant take it while bf'ing?

Pavlov I didn't notice that you were pg [big dur] I just spoke to a very kind lady at the Breastfeeding Network drug helpline and she said that I CAN take it as the dose is tiny. She couldn't comment on its safety for pregnant women but she said if you ring the number they will put you onto their pharmacist who should be able to advise you. The number is 0844 124665. Hope that helps

pavlovthepregnantcat · 13/04/2009 20:12

Oh thank you! DH Bought me some Anbesol, the only thing he recognised! It has numbed it, temporarily. He said it had better work seeing as it aint cheap for such a tiny little vial!!

I think it burst [tmi!] which is why it is so so sore now - i am taking that as a good sign!

pavlovthepregnantcat · 13/04/2009 20:32

belgiunbun - i wonder, perhaps it is to do with being run down as all our nutrients are needed elsewhere?
