Scared of the MIRENA COIL!!!!

Please HELP!!!!
Been advised by fantastic Gynie to have a mirena coil- I suffer from THE most heavy periods, am firing on 1 cylinder! & am v anaemic !!! Totally fed up with having to stay in for 2/3 days a month & use giant nappy type pads! I also suffer from heavy 'gushes' which means my life stops when my period arrives! I am 36, have had 2 kids & husband had the 'snip' so not planning any more!

I would love to hear anyones experiences (good & bad) - I am so scared of anything like this & have stupidly looked at the list of side effects on the internet which has put me right off!

DR has advised I have it fitted whilst sedated as I am so tense & nervous etc- anyone else had it fitted like this?

Thanks .x

I was having another op when I had mine put in , but apparently it can be quite painful.

would be worth it I think if it went and you had no periods for 5 years!

The internet can often tell you all the bad things and often not the good ones

I'm on my second Mirena - had the first for 5 years before I had been pg. That was rather crampy going in, but no worse than my period pain. No periods at all in the 5 years. Second was fitted when DS was 12 weeks old, just get a very light spotting every month. Didn't hurt at all going in.

No problems at all with either of them, and I have a couple of friends with them who are very pleased - including one who was having problem bleeding.

The good thing is that they are super simple to remove, so if you don't get on with it it's not a problem to get rid

hauschkahels · 09/04/2009 21:24

I agree about the internet- problem with me is I think I will be the one that gets the pelvic inflamation & cysts etc- do you think that if it's OK from the start then it will probably be fine for the duration?

I can not imagine a life without awful heavy periods- sounds to good to be true- 5 years, bliss!

at the end of the day you could listen to 100 people give different accounts of their experience

But you wont know how it will be like for you untill you have one done!!

hauschkahels · 09/04/2009 21:26

Just seen herbieta's comment- OMG sounds awful- that's exactly what I'm scared of, also what is an endometrial ablation?? Are you OK now?

Just to be voice of doom, I have actually had heavier periods since having my coil.
However, I hadn't had any for over 3 years before that (PG twice and BFing) so it might be that.
Have had it in about a year and periods came back about 4 months ago, very heavy.
I also got terrible acne for about 6 months which is apparently a common side effect.

Cramping is not such a problem though compared to before DD's. I use a mooncup too and have leaks on occasion as it fills very quickly but nothing that isn't contained by towels.

hauschkahels · 09/04/2009 21:31

I agree anniebear- I am so good at driving myself mad! I just need to feel like I'm making an informed decision-I always worry about everything & try to talk myself out of things- I think I'm more scared of the anasthetic (excuse spellings! )

If you don't get on with it, how soon after removal did the side effect cease?

I have just had mine taken out because of the acne and hair loss it caused. i also lost my waist completely (worse than after childbirth). i was running my fingers through my hair and ten hairs would be on my fingers. if you are prone to acne or don't have really thick hair i would say think carefully. it was brilliant for periods - mine stopped completely, but for me it wasn't worth the side effects. perhaps i am vain! it wasn't very painful to put in, and it was totally painless to have removed. don't let that stop you. if you've had children it should be fine - the cervix has had far worse done to it!

quickienamechangee · 09/04/2009 21:39

noooooo don't do it! I had mine out today ( there is a thread in chat about it!)

Horrible thing...migraines, bruises, paranoia, blisters, pain....the list goes on.

Google it first and know all the facts before you go ahead with it.

expatinscotland · 09/04/2009 21:50

'I had it took out and had an endometrial ablation. My periods have been much slighter and more easy to manage ever since. I would recommend that'

My sister had this, too.

She tried Mirena for heavy bleeding and of course they fobbed her off for months telling her her horrible side effects would 'settle'.

After 10 months of hell she had it taken out.

She had the ablation and never looked back!

LynetteScavo · 09/04/2009 21:55

I've had mine for nearly 2 years with no problems at all. My periods were never very heavy, but now they are almost non existant.
