Severe period pain 15 year old - any suggested remedies? homeopathic?

My poor DD was curled up on the floor this morning with period pain after vomiting. Her periods started OK at 13 1/2 yrs old. In the past 6-9 months they have got more painful and she vomits when it starts. Last month was actually OK so we thought she had turned a corner but this morning has been the worst of all.

Feminax did not help.

She has had Ibuprofen earlier and has just has paracetamol. She is feeling a bit better after a sleep with a warm hot water bottle. Still in bed. If she was not on holiday she would have missed a day at school (again).

Has anyone found a helpful remedy without resorting to the pill?

Try the GP. I got a painkiller prescribed to me when I was 16 which was quite good, but the only thing that really helped was the pill (then getting pregnant at 21 finally sorted me out!) Sorry to not be much more help.

Buscopan with ibruprofen works well for me.

Ponstan forte or mefanamic acid would have to be prescribed by dr but sorted me out when I was a teenager - not vomiting but very severe period pains, kept me off school for at least one day a cycle.

bosch · 21/04/2009 23:03

Ha! mefenamic acid! sorry bout typo

Claire2009 · 21/04/2009 23:06

Mefenamic Acid is Ponstan.

Sorry not much help, I have severe period pains/mid cycle pains & I have endo, I'm 24.

I had acupuncture for severe period pains as a teenager. It worked really well - the combination of treatment and lifestyle changes (she suggested going to a yoga class and eating less sugar) seemed to help. Many years later I had problems conceiving and used acupuncture again - again it seemed to work. I don't know if there's been any proper research into this area though.

I found that exercise really helped. Though I usually didn't want to anything leading up to and on the first day of my period.

Hope it doesn't sound to pathetic a solution!

Poor thing - hope you manage to find a solution. I had them same and was prescribed Buscopan and Ponstan. I used to get awful pains and nearly passed out several times with it: it did get better when I was older. The only other time I had those pains was when I was in (undiagnosed....) labour so they do really hurt!

dds periods were awful at 15 , fainting due to the pain and being admitted to hospital etc , gp put her on the pill, said it was the only option - it worked.
she also suggested an anti inflam specially for periods beginning with t ??
but as she's asthmatic wasn't allowed it.

My daughter started the combined pill at 15 for this reason. She felt well, stable moods and no weight gain.
She said she got her life back.
She stayed on it for 5 years happily until she changed to a long acting contraceptive.

Mefamic acid and naproxen started immediately at the sign of period started was the only thing that worked for me.

Acupuncture worked for my dd. She had PMT, extreme period pains, the lot. Unfortunately she is scared of needles and only to took one treatment, but the symptoms were halved and, according to the doctor, would have gone away if she had taken the course of treatment.

The pill - absolute life changer. Especially now it is recognised that you didn't need to have the break between packets.

Back in the day I was allowed to have 3 packets and then a break - no periods at all is far better even than a milder period Grin

When I got old (thirties) and fat I was moved on to the POP and that was even better as no periods. What a relief.

My periods were always miserable with fainting, terrible pain and flooding. And later migraines just for good measure. Not having them at all has been a complete joy.

I found mefenamic acid useless at the time. Used to take it like smarties.

Unfortunately we have spent 3 years going through this with DD and I was the same.
We tried everything but only the pill helped - and then it was the third one she tried after a referral from a Private Gynae
