Silver fillings (free) or white (£75)-which would you go for?

Am I horribly vain to want white? Over half of one of my molars needs covering, and the silver ones made my mum's teeth go a horrid blue colour. Am I being a horribly money waster? It will be in my mouth forever, and I spent a long time with braces etc so am really proud of my teeth and look after them really well so don't want a great silver monstrosity in it from now on.

white might not last as long but it's definitely prettier. white i say.

LuluisgoingtobeanAunty · 07/04/2009 18:55

white if i could afford it

pippibluestocking · 07/04/2009 18:55

It would depend on whether it is one near the front or the back. White if one of front 2 molars, amalgam if one of back 3.

LadyOfScoffleTheEasterEggs · 07/04/2009 18:55

White. Silver look so so awful (I have a few )

NorktasticNinja · 07/04/2009 18:56

white

Pawslikepaddington · 07/04/2009 18:57

It is one from the back, but it is the whole inside of the tooth (the whole side next to my tongue, so will be quite obvious if I am laughing etc.

white

Pawslikepaddington · 07/04/2009 18:58

Am so glad there is a white consensus-I feel like I am taking £75 away from dd's lifestyle, but I can always stay in jeans all summer instead of buying some dresses (or ask my dad for it for my birthday ).

silver - they last much longer so cheaper in the long run. exactly WHO is going to look in your mouth??

trixymalixy · 07/04/2009 21:17

White, i hate seeing people's fillings when they laugh.

DumbledoresGirl · 07/04/2009 21:18

Silver. I had some white ones a few years ago and one had to be replaced a few months ago. The dentist told me that white fillings are not as good as silver ones.

KatyMac · 07/04/2009 21:19

I'd have white

I wonder about putting mercury in your mouth

MargaretMountford · 07/04/2009 21:19

white

basementbear · 07/04/2009 21:21

White - it is so worth it. I had my two back molars done about 16 years ago now, they are still fine. In fact when I changed dentists, the new one was marvelling at my teeth and the fact that I had no fillings - I had to point them out to him

Washersaurus · 07/04/2009 21:21

I'd have white too, even if I need to have them re-done at some point. My mum has silver ones and they do look yuk when you laugh. I suppose it depends on how happy you are; do you throw your head back and laugh a lot?

KatyMac · 07/04/2009 21:22

Mt dentist won't take my silver ones out to replace them with white ones

He says as they fail he will replace them but he isn't freeing up mercury into my mouth unnecessarily

ridingjoker · 07/04/2009 21:24

the white ones i've got have been replaced twice. silver one are going strong into their 2nd decade

oxocube · 07/04/2009 21:24

I had my visible silver fillings replaced with white a few years back and any new will be white too. Looks so much better and worth the money I think

cariboo · 07/04/2009 21:30

lol - my mum has gold ones & a Tunisian dentist once said to her: "Madame, quelle richesse dans votre bouche!"

I had my metal ones replaced with white ones which was actually not a personal choice but the dentist insisted, muttering something about mercury. This was years ago when I had private med insurance thru the U.N. Ah, the good ol' days!

ellingwoman · 07/04/2009 21:31

Agree with marmite - I can't say I've ever noticed other people's fillings. Although will look from now on obviously

Argh I just don't know now! I HATE HATE HATE silver ones, but dad (bless him ) refused to contribute for my b'day as he has "just bought a new car for x (his wife) and she needed a new tomtom for it". Which is fair enough, but does that REALLY mean he can't stick £20 in a card for his only daughter's birthday!?! Sorry, am really cross because I have just looked at my bank balance and white is a no-go, and I don't want mercury in my mouth!
