My grandmother has has heart attacks in the past, the last one being over 4 years ago.
She has recently had her medication changed and has been experiencing symptoms similar to the ones she had before her last heart attack.
however, she had a day recently when she felt wonderful and couldn't work out why, until she realisec that she wasn't having the symptoms.
This was a day when she had eaten fish instead of meat and she is wondering if there could be a connection.

Many many thanks from me and from her.

Hey, TooT, no advice but bumping and hope she's ok.

lilymolly · 05/04/2009 11:43

what where the symptoms?

could have been heartburn/indigestion symptoms related to having meat?

TooTicky · 05/04/2009 11:45

I have not been given full details, just asked to find out what I can but they are definitely the same symptoms as before her heart attack and a recent thing. Normally meat doesn't trouble her.Obviously this is worrying her quite a bit so that doesn't help.

Thanks LR

Oh blimey, no idea, sorry.

She should try it again and see if it happens again. Well, that's what I would do and then go from there.

sorry, in order to be helpful, need more info re symptoms and meds.

TooTicky · 07/04/2009 06:41

hmm, I've not actually been given all that much information.
The main thing she wants to know is, is it logical that avoiding meat would make such a difference?

TooTicky
You will probably find that the Fish did her some good. If she can swap the meat for Fish then do it.
The omega 3 helps to get rid of the cholesterol that could be causing her awful symptoms and feeling horrid.

Meat contains lots of Fat and isnt good for the heart. Although elder people need fat, they dont need the saturated fat in the meat. So get her to drink milk, margerine not butter, and to get her to take some multi vitamins. The best one if she doesnt want to take a tablet can be Abidec or similar for adults. You can by these from any pharmacy or health shop. But speak to the Pharmacist first as they can advise which would be best with her condition.

Make sure any vits she takes contain:
Iron
Calcium
Vit D - To help the absorbtion of Calcium
Vit A
Vit C - To help the obsorbtion of Iron
B12 and B6
Omega 3 and 6

It's because fish has very little fat in it and fish has almost nil saturated fat. So although the cholesterol in fish is not much different than what you would find in meat, it's draw card is that, without much saturated fat, there is almost nothing in fish for our body to convert to cholesterol. Meat on the other hand, with it's saturated fat, can fuel the body with the saturated fat to make cholesterol.

Chellesgirl · 07/04/2009 14:46

Tuna in oil and smoked salmon are the best as they only contain small amounts of cholesterol and nil saturated fat. 0.4-0.5mg, unlike meat such as beef and chicken contain 1.0mg.

Low cholesterol recipes for preparing fish are to either boil, poach or fry - with a thin spray of vegatable oil, such as canola oil. Oven baking of fish is acceptable, provided only a thin spray of oil is used. The fish can be seasoned any way you want, provided the seasonings are cholesterol and saturated fat free. Try using the herbs and spices that help lower cholesterol

"Oily fish such as sardines, herring, mackerel, trout and salmon are all rich sources of omega 3 fatty acids, which help prevent heart disease." www.eatwell.gov.uk/healthydiet/nutritionessentials/fishandshellfish/

Sorry I rant on...
