hi all, i've lurked but not posted before, but i'd really like to know if there is anyone in a similar situation to me?
i've got severe gum disease which has got rapidly worse over the past few years while i've been pregnant and breastfeeding and generally neglecting myself.
i'm now being treated at a dental hospital and am sure i'll get good professional care and advice there but would really love to chat with fellow sufferers as i don't know anyone else with this condition and i suspect there aren't many since the consultant did say i was a very severe case especially for my age.
so anyone else desperately clinging on to their lovely teeth set in dreadful gums?

I've just found this thread. Haven't been to dentist for years- huge huge phobia. And after sticking my head in the sand for a long time I have finally booked an appt for next week. My gums are badly receded in several places and I'm absolutely shit scared.

Betty- can your GP refer you to a dental hospital? It might be worth asking because they can sometimes treat hard cases that normal dentists aren't managing.

As far as I know the treatment should be deep cleans of the sockets using a local anaesthetic if needed, antibiotics to kill bacteria, mouthwashes like Corsidol, tee pee brushes for cleaning between the teeth and of course avoiding food and drink that are sugary.

Mrsmorton · 13/11/2014 19:55

Betty have you seen your dentist about it? Your GP would tell you to see the dentist (who can then refer you if necessary). IME, 99% of GPs won't take any responsibility for dental problems quite rightly IMO.

Hi all. I'm just wondering if any of you could provide an update on your loose teeth situation after all these years?? I went to the dentist for the first time in years a month ago as I could feel the start of a loose tooth and I was in a terrible state. She said I had gum disease and bone loss, and subsequently booked me in for an advanced clean, however, I've had to wait 4 weeks for this and my mind has been racing ever since. Within the last few days, two more teeth have started to become loose from the gum and again, I'm in an awful state. They're all on the top, and it's my hen do this weekend sad I'm really struggling to eat comfortably and afraid of any more becoming loose. I have my deep clean treatment in 5 days - I have been advised that a few sessions of deep cleans and excellent oral hygiene that the gum disease can be stabilised, but I'm so impatient. Plus, I get married in 3 months, I don't want loose teeth then and afraid by then that the looseness will be worse sad

I just want to know if anyone who had loose teeth and has had deep cleans has found that this has helped to keep the teeth stable at all?

id like to know this too, a year of rigorous dental care and three monthly checkups and my gums are actually worse, nearly every tooth is pocketed, readings broadly at 5.5mm.

i havent missed a dentist or hygenist appointment in ten years, so feel pretty upset. but i was a major fagger, so no sympathy deserved.

i am desperate for some hope.

Hello, I wasn't on the original thread but have all kinds of problems - pockets of 10 at the back and a tooth at the front removed after the probe couldn't even measure the pocket. Luckily it's mostly my molars now and other pockets generally not over 3.

I have constant phased root planing and it does seem to have stabilised a bit but takes a long time. I don't think you will be in imminent danger of things getting worse in 4 weeks tbh - probably psychological (totally understandable).

Was seeing an oral health consultant today as I now seem to have lichens planus or disquamative gingivitis Confused. I feel really unlucky - no fillings and oral hygiene now exemplary (for the past 10 years) with every interdental brush/single tufted toothbrush etc going...

Excellent idea for a thread revival !
Come on you original posters, come and talk teeth and gums !

Can someone please explain what is so good about Philips Sonicare ?

peaceout · 29/04/2017 01:00

not sure if it's been mentioned but I have found the waterpik very helpful for gum health

I HAVE SOME GOOD NEWS on the depressing dental front....

Pockets all 4 and 5 last year - I was devastated. It was my first diagnosis of gum disease.

I:
quit fags
Raised my teepee action
bought waterpik
took vitamins c and d
started oil pulling
reduced my sugar intake.

i went to my hygenist today and my teeth were all 2-5, with a 7...no idea how this has got so much worse, but im confident i can sort that out....im amazed at the overall improvement.

one thing hygeniest told me today: Apparently, you must also teepee vertically!!

Hi, not sure if you fellow gum/loose teeth sufferers are about but wanted to join in. My bleeding gums started with pregnancy, my son is now 16! After a few years of rubbish dentists I finally got one that actually pointed out how bad my gums were. Over the last 4 years I have had multiple deep cleans and root planning with a periodontist. I currently see my hygienist every 8 weeks for a quadrant of deep cleaning & along with an electric tooth brush, numerous interdental brushes etc and my trusty water flosser we were ticking over. Not perfect but pockets reduced from a high of 8 down to 3-6. Dentist & hygienist suggested to me about seeing a specialist again as long term they can’t clean as deep as a periodontist can.
Well today I had my appointment, it went well, he was very nice but... he recommends periodontal flap surgery Shock which sounds horrendous & at a cost of approx £2000 on only 5 areas of my gums, 3 top & 2 bottom. I’m booked into do this over 2 x 2 hour sessions but I’m now panicking as after googling tonight I’m really worried my already receding gums will recede even more after surgery/healing process. My 2 top left & right incisors have dropped considerably over the last year and cosmetically I’m worried they’ll look even worse after. Is it wrong to worry more about what you can see than what’s happening under the gum line?!?! Cost is bothering me as we were about to book our family holiday and this is a serious knock to our budget! Sad Hope this thread is still looked at, be good to chat to people in similar situation, I feel so embarrassed to discuss with anyone apart from my hubby.

SerenSmith · 24/03/2018 11:52

Hi. I’m another sufferer here. Had to go to emergency dentist this morning as I have an infected tooth and infection has spread. Currently on strong anti biotics

I have severe periodontitis too, receding gums - it’s reslly affected my confidence. I started treatment 18 months ago but stopped and need to start again which I plan to do this week.

SophiaY · 16/04/2026 20:50

Hi, just wondering if you have any updates?

bellabelly · 16/04/2026 23:47

I'm wondering too! I have been an absolute coward about going to the dentist and have avoided for years. Recently one of my teeth (next to front tooth) has really dropped down and is v loose. I'm going to have to get it looked at but I'm so scared. I feel really ashamed at the terrible state my teeth and gums are in! Also a bit worried about how much it's all going to cost.
