First time was nasty. Swollen eyelid. lots of gunge. OTC Chlorampheniol for 7 days.

3 days later start getting a little itchy and watery first thing in teh moring so I think it is coming bacl. Chloramphenicol for 5 days.

3 days later start getting a little itchy again. Go to GP who prescribes Fusidic acid for 5 days.

3 days later I wake up this morning and my eye is crusty AGAIN.

What do I do now (bearing in mind it is Saturday). Shall I restart the fusidic acid without Drs instructions? Shall I just try and treat with cooled boiled water so I don't rebound after ABs. HELP

According to my GP, the best thing for conjunctivitis is very diluted johnsons baby shampoo - bathe your eyes in that, and hey presto! It really does work....

noddyholder · 04/04/2009 11:30

I would do the fucidic acid but go back as it may be iritis and not conjunctivitis which needs different treatment i think

SlightlyMadSimnelCake · 04/04/2009 11:32

TBH that is what I am thinking Noddy - DO fusidic acid to get me over the weekend. Although TBH I found the chloramphenicol more effective. He only changed it as he thought there was some chloramphenicol resistance resulting in teh rebound.

I have had chloramphenicol drops in teh day and the horrible gunky cream at night which is what I think killed it

SlightlyMadSimnelCake · 04/04/2009 11:44

Oh joy......

I think I am doing everything right. Seperate flannels, bathing with cooled boiled water we jusy can't bloody shift it.

deffo get the cream but put it on at the last minute before sleep as it blinds you! There are sterile eyelid cleaners wipe things which are good too

Agree with paolosgirl. I had a eye infections continuosly and became immune to the chlorphenicol, was sent to the hospital and she said to wash eyes with diluted baby shampoo with a cotton bud and it cleared it up immediately. Whenever I get the first signs I use the shampoo and it doesn't develop into anything.

paolosgirl · 04/04/2009 13:48

My GP is very reluctant to prescribe anything for conjuntivitis - he says that the dilute johnsons is just as effective iho, without the risk of developing any immunity to the medication. Worth a go?

SlightlyMadSimnelCake · 04/04/2009 15:32

Yes...I will have to pop round next door to borrow some shampooo (ine have grown out of it).

My friend has recently had a couple attacks of conjunctivitis she would just get it cleared and then it would reoccur. She mentioned it an old friends of her mothers who had been a nurse and she told her to put a tea bag in some boiling water let it cool and using cotton wool bath the eyes every couple of hours. She couldn't believe it when it worked and has been clear since. To keep the mixture sterile she rinsed out a small bottle with hot water and put it in it and then just poured some on bits of cotton wool.

Arrrrgggghhhhhh I am going out of my mind.

Tell me the details of shamppo please.
How dilute?
How often?
What exactly do you do with it?

Blepharitis and lid cleaning.

You could go for an eye test and the optician could look at the surface of the eye on a microscope to check if there is an underlying problem (GPs don't usually have this) and refer you on to the hospital eye clinic if necessary.
