We have been TTC since Jan but we are going to have to put it on hold for a bit I think

We were using condoms before and it is a bit rubbish really.

So am now thinking the coil, any opinions or experience? I have heard negative things about the Mirena but not too much about the coil?

I know it makes your periods heavier but I have mega mega light periods now - only 4 days so I think I could handle it?

We will probably try again in a year is it ok to just have it for a year?

Can I have it if I am fat a bit overweight?

Cheers.

I am pretty overweight and had it without question. It did make my periods almost unbearably heavy though.

ouchitreallyhurts · 03/04/2009 15:35

I was overweight when I had mine put in (was about 3 stone overweight probably)

it was ok until it fell out and baby number 4 came about! I understand it that you can have it in for a short time but someone else might know more

smurfgirl · 03/04/2009 15:46

Oh no really heavy ceolas? Hm.

At the moment I have 2 days normal flow and 2 days of barely anything...could cope with more but don't want crazy heavy periods.

Contraception is a pain isn't it?!

It didn't make my periods heavy, like yours mine were light before. I think they go on for a couple of days longer now but overall are no heavier. I have no period pain either.

Some doctors may not want to put it in if you want it for a short time though, maybe it's not cost-effective. So I'd suggest being vague about your ttc plans when you talk to the doctor.

smurfgirl · 03/04/2009 15:54

Our TTC plans are vague tbh, we said we would give it a few months and see and now its not happened in this short time we are starting to feel that maybe waiting longer is a better decision for us. I am rambeling on sorry.

alarkaspree your period experience sound smore positive

Mine were pretty average 5 day affairs before. 3 days heavier (but not horrific) and 2 days lighter. With the coil they were 5 days of very heavy bleeding. It was like this for about 6-8 months then improved.

smurfgirl · 03/04/2009 16:22

Sorry to be rude but by very heavy do you mean changing tampon/pad every hour type heavy? After 6 months what was it like?

Were your periods painful once they got heavier?

Understand if this is TMI and you don't want to share!

No, I'm not embarrassed! By very heavy I mean like postpartum bleeding. Like you stand up and leak through. Changing pad every 1-2 hours through the day. Constantly nervous that my clothing was stained. Pretty yuck really!

After 6 (but I think nearer 8) months it was back to how it was. Never had a lot of pain, but felt pretty tired.

That is only my experience though. Get more opinions before you decide

smurfgirl · 03/04/2009 19:53

I have not had a baby so not sure about that bleeding but hmmm that does sound bad

I have booked an appointment with the nurse so will have a chat about it.

Thinking about it further, I wasn't actually having periods at all for the first six months or so after I had the coil inserted because I had it done very soon after childbirth. So don't be too reassured by my experience, it's probably not very representative!

I think that the coil is usually considered unsuitable for women who haven't given birth because the cervix hasn't been opened up enough for it to be easily inserted. I could well be out of date on that though.
