irritating fishbone in throat...

madwomanintheattic · 02/04/2009 13:59

any ideas? mackerel, if you're interested. tried the old wives bread trick to shift it, and don't think it has worked. either that or it's just irritated as scratched and will clear up. but suspect not. somewhere around the epiglottis lol.

been 24 hours now and i'm getting crabbier. my diet is going down the pan with the vast amounts of assorted texture i'm eating to shift it...

will it, sort of, decompose and shift, leaving me with nothing but bad breath? or am i going to have to make a total numpty of myself and go to the doc as it'll need fishing (lol) out?

bump.
help?

Pop to A&E and see if they can shift it. They can move into the strangest of places so it's best to get it sorted. Don't leave it.

becstarlitsea · 02/04/2009 15:07

I had to have one pulled out by the doctor when I was a kid. Can you feel it there, or could it really just be a scratch? I could feel mine, although mum kept telling me it was a scratch. Mine was quite big though.

ABetaDad · 02/04/2009 15:10

It might just be that the bone is gone and your throat is scratched? I suspect the feeling would be similar.

Perhaps try one of those throat sprays that people use that have laryngitis?

madwomanintheattic · 02/04/2009 15:10

lol. i have no idea if it's still there or a scratch... it's immensely annoying, but i can't decide whether to be a loon who turns up at the docs with a scratch, or a loon who doesn't and ends up in a&e with an infection/ fishbone in her lungs lol.

OP posts:
madwomanintheattic · 02/04/2009 15:11

throat sprays. would that stop the irritation if it is a scratch? so i would know?

OP posts:
becstarlitsea · 02/04/2009 15:12

Might as well go to A&E. At least you'll know one way or the other and can celebrate with some food that isn't chosen for its abrasive qualities!

NoBiggy · 02/04/2009 15:14

A&E. They'll peer down your throat, pull your tongue, and try and get it with an implement.

Mine was, apparently, "like a dagger", I gagged when the dr pulled my tongue and the bone dislodged itself.

And now I don't eat anything with bones

madwomanintheattic · 02/04/2009 15:18

will they laugh if they can't find anything and it's a scratch?
they will, i know. i would.
and dh will tell me i'm being a hypochondriac lol.

but i will be able to stop eating bread...

OP posts:
NoBiggy · 02/04/2009 15:20

So what if they laugh?

You don't have to see them tomorrow and get embarassed again.

(They won't laugh, btw)

becstarlitsea · 02/04/2009 15:20

They won't laugh. They have seen much, much, much funnier things than a phantom fishbone. Trust me, they have. To get a laugh in A&E you'd need the fishbone to be in your bottom, at the very least.

madwomanintheattic · 02/04/2009 15:25

rofl. i am almost convinced.
'phantom fishbone' i may use that description at the desk. 'could you just confirm that the phantom fishbone i have in my throat is, indeed, a phantom?' in a sort of hugh grant manner. i can always flop my fringe down and hurry out if necessary.
thanks - will muster self lol.

Could you get your GP to perhaps take a quick look down the throat and verify if a fishbone is there or a scratch now/tonight and then at least if it is a bone the GP could write a referral lettter and then you could take that to A&E and they will take you more seriously?

Having had the experience of sitting in A&E and being ignored as a 'minor' case for 4 hours - I would certainly try and avoid it if it were possible.

madwomanintheattic · 02/04/2009 15:32

that's my current dither abetadad. not sure if i have enough time for a lengthy a&e wait before pick-up time lol. only two hours left... do have time to pop to surgery though. could go to a&e later if necessary before the post-pub rush lol....
right. i may be some time....

Our walk-in centre has magnifiers and bright lights for that sort of procedure. If you have one, try there.

DD had a raisin up her nose... now they all laughed at that.

madwomanintheattic · 02/04/2009 18:13

oh blow. gp couldn't see me so had to make appointment for first thing tomorrow.
will go to a&e later depending on how irritating it is/ brave i am about going another night without knowing lol. nhs direct did laugh, but told me i'd have to wait an hour to discuss it with a nurse.

we haven't got a walk-in centre... lol at raisin though - i remember my sister getting a small piece of fuzzy felt stuck up her nose when i was about 5. i was exceedingly miffed that the doc wouldn't let me have it back when they finally fished it out...

ah well. tomorrow morning at the latest, eh.

supergluebum · 02/04/2009 18:24

Are you doing that cough/gagg/heufghhhh noise thing to try to dislodge it? I got a piece of thyme stuck in my throat when I was a teenager. My mum couldn't be arsed to remove the sticks from the leaves and just chopped up little daggers for our salad...I digress. The doc pulled it out, that was truly gag worthy, but prescribed me difflam rinse. I believe you can buy that over the counter and might give you some relief. It could bring down any swelling in the meantime and it might come out on its own. I feel your pain!

FluffyBunnyGoneBad · 02/04/2009 19:56

They won't laugh. I once saw an x-ray of some poor person who had swallowed a fish bone which got stuch horizontally in his throat. He needed surgery to get it out apparantly.

smallone · 02/04/2009 20:03

I've had this, the bread needs to be quite a big mouthful and overchewed, then swallow and it should take the bone with it. I've had to resort to swallowing a big chunk of icecream too, that helped coz it numbs the throat too.

madwomanintheattic · 03/04/2009 15:00

doc said she thinks it's gone, but if i can't breathe over the weekend i should go straight to a&e. lol. there was gagging.

she also told me i'm coming down with tonsillitus, but that this was a different sort of infection to that caused by fishbone scratches. bigger lol.

i can still feel something lol hopefully it's just germs lol.

thanks for all advice. will see if i can swill it out with wine later i think (and ice cream...)

OP posts:
FluffyBunnyGoneBad · 03/04/2009 15:03

Well done. Have some whiskey/brandy to ease the pain

madwomanintheattic · 03/04/2009 15:11

brandy. that's my sort of advice. oh, not yet?

OP posts:
SoupDreggon · 03/04/2009 15:15

I had a fishbone lodged in my tonsil (whiting I think). Horrible having it removed with, yes, lots of gagging. Anyway, it felt like it was still there for a good couple of days but went away after drinking copious amounts of alcohol and eating cake and chocolate eventually.

madwomanintheattic · 03/04/2009 15:23

cake and choc too.
okay.
