Recommendations for somewhere to go (with 2 year old) to convalesce, feel pampered and looked after

Pregnant, SAHM on 5th chest infection since Christmas. I just feel I need a week somewhere where good wholesome food is on tap, there's things for my toddler to play with/do that are reasonabily low maintenance for me, other children perhaps, fresh air and just a chance to have a bit of a rest. Don't mind spending a bit of the old life savings for a chance of a proper break. Can you think of anywhere or am I in a fantasy?

Whereabouts are you and how far do you want to travel?

MamaG · 30/03/2009 14:15

Come to my house. I'll make you nice food and let your toddler play with my DC

For that I will charge you £10,000.00

Poor you though, bet you feel horrid

alittleteapot · 30/03/2009 14:20

In London, travel three or so hours I guess, maybe further for right place.

MamaG you joke but that sounds appealing right now! I really want to go and stay with my mum but she's not around anymore

You know when thinking what to cook becomes so taxing that you have to sit down? That's where I'm at right now...

Google "children's hotels" or "family hotels" in London, there's a fab-sounding one but I can't remember its name! Sorry.

Or Centreparcs - rather £££ but good stuff for kids and lovely LOVELY spa for you. x

The Elms is fab

notyummy · 30/03/2009 14:40

I have been to The Elms as well...very nice. Creche and pool complex are very new and lovely. Staff are nice...and even a mega friendly 'on-site' cat and dog that my toddler loved!

One of the basic rooms (they are not THAT basic at all...just the cheapest!) has a separate small interconnecting bedroom ideal for a toddler, and they charge it at the same rate as one room...you need to ask for it though.

alittleteapot · 31/03/2009 11:50

Thanks ladies. Been looking at the other hotels in The Elms chain too. Mmmm. And Centreparcs good idea. I've never been...

Teapot; have a look on here and on tripadvisor for reviews of the the hotels in that chain. Some of them are slightly more tired in their facilities, so may not be quite as good as the Elms. I have stayed at the Ickworth and it was pretty good, but didn't feel it was as good as the Elms, and didn't feel we had such good value for money.

Calcot manor in gloucestershire is lovely. expensive, but worth it.

alittleteapot · 31/03/2009 12:06

Moonfleet Manor looks good - anyone been there?

Really not worth the expense, disappointed with quality of furniture in the rooms. staff tried to make up for it and were very helpful, but left feeling disappointed.

the price tag is definitely luxurious, the hotel itself less so and could do with a revamp, in particular the play areas are looking a bit tired. however, the staff are very friendly and laid back and the restaurant is great- so altogether a good weekend option if money is not an issue!

Well-thought out with a nice creche space, good pool and great location. Food was nice and staff were relaxed. The only downside for me was a large indoor play hall were there were one or two outdoor toys but not enough and there was sometimes a bit of scrabble for stuff. But spending £200 at the ELC should sort that out.

Good windswept location. Shabby/chic manor house with excellent service, lots of kiddy stuff to keep them entertained both inside and out. Lovely food/wine in evening in a nice spacious restaurant.

We stayed in a coachhouse attached to main house. Very spacious with an upstairs huge double bed and sitting area and downstairs twin bedroom and sitting room (bit gloomy).

Lovely baby sitter who sat up and watched dvds with our children (they adored her) and also worked in the creche during the day.

We too were very disappointed and shocked by the facilities - most of which were sub municipal rather than luxury. To date I have written to complain twice and have had no response. The hotel itself was nice, food was very good, but the 'sittings' for dinner reservations proved very stressful when trying to get kids to bed. Overall, very expensive and not what the brochure implies.
