Can you get thrush/funagl infections of the eye?

Bit of history:

9th march wake up with hideously swollen eyelid, vastly bloodyshot and gungy eyes with my eyelids glued together.

treat with OTC chloramphenicol drops as per instructions - but for 7 days rather than 5 as it is only just clear after the 5 day dose and I know that it will rebound as there will still be sub-clinical infection.

3-4 days later my eye is getting itchy and water again with a bit of green gunge in teh corners in the mornings. I do another 5 day chloramphenicl course ending this Weds.

Yesterday I wake up itchy watery and with an inflammed lower internal eyelid thingy so I book an appointment at GP who prescribes fuscidic acid drops (which are evil). Although he didn't actually physically examine me (I was there with DD3 who also has been going through teh same cycle - and he did examine her).

So I used the new (evil) drops twice last night and this morning I wake up even more gungy than ever. Now at this stage I am prepared to think that this is natural progression of the infection and that the drops will need a day or 2 to kick in. BUT I also know that use of ABs can cause a fungal infection to thrive so that is in the back of my mind.

Any thoughts/experience?

I had similar last year, I also wondered if it was thrush in the eye. The doctors all said no.

I ended up going to the eye hospital because the infection was so severe, and I was pregnant. I was given very strong eye drops and it took quite a few days to get better.

I suggest you so the same, you can't take any risks with your eyes.

Thanks belgo.

I am happy to see what happens tomorrow morning - as I do think that it is unlikely the ABs have kicked in yet....I am just pondering....

Was it thrush in the end or just a particularly severe bacterial infection?

No it wasn't thrush, I asked the doctors if it was, and they said no.

It was a particularly bad bacterial eye infection, brought on by contact lense wearing, in particular going swimming with my lenses in, getting droplets of dirty swimming pool water under the lense, causing a very nasty infection. I haven't been able to wear contact lenses since, but at least my eyes are not damaged.

I think my first episode was exagerated by swimming. I stupidly though the chlorine would do it some good. Have avoided swimming since.

Carry on with the antibiotics, they can take a while to kick in. The hospital doctor told me off for stopping the eye drops because they weren't making my eyes any better (I had stopped the eye drops on the advice of my GP). The hospital dr said I should have carried on with them because they can take a while to work. In the end I needed far stronger eye drops.

No swimming pools, especially the nice warm ones for children, are full of bugs apparently. Usually this isn't a problem, but I have sensitive eyes, and my contact lenses made my eyes even more sensitive.

Hi, my Mum had Candida (thrush I think) in her eye after a stay in hospital. It made her vision blurry in one eye for a few weeks. Not sure what they treated with it, but I do know it has cleared up.

that's interesting sexonlegs.

The tests they did on my eyes in hospital were agony. Apparently I had some sort of weird membrane formation under my bottom eyelid making it hard for me to close my eye. It was horrible.

Dunno...I wouldn't say there is much inflammation...
