I have been getting really bad headaches for a week now. I think they are migraines.

What can I do to stop them? I have got alot of stress on my mind at the moment, so not sure if they are due to stress.

Migraine's can be a sign of dehydration. Are you drinking plenty of fluids? Too much caffeine can trigger them in some people too.

I do normally drink alot of water but do feel thirsty alotso maybe that is why.

Try over the counter: syndol, paramol or imigran...(all horse-strength painkillers) If I get to my migraine quick enough the first 2 usually work, if not the last one takes it away completely 99% of the time.

I find lucozade tabs help as well, I think mine are menstrual-blood sugar related.

migraines can be diet related.

My DD3 sufferes from them, and she was put on a special 'migraine diet' (ie, told what food could set them off).

among them were......

citrus fruits
coke/coffee
chocolate
cheese
raspberries and bananas and pineapple
marmite
shellfish, pickled and smoked fish
E numbers, tartrizine (sp?) especially.
being dehydrated
and late nights.

maybe avoiding some of the above might also help while you find some medication that suits you too.

Before you take any migraine-specific medication you need to get a specific diagnosis of migraine. Get to the doctor with a list of symptoms - severity does not make a migraine. You can have a migraine with only a mild headache - it's a complex range of symptoms and not just about a bad headache. Taking imigran or similar can bring on scary chest pains and worse, and no pharmacist should let you have it unless you've already discussed it with your doctor.

Rant Over.

I agree with theDreadPiratePerArdua. Imigran is not a painkiller, it is a specific treatment for migraine and works by reversing the widening of blood vessels in the head thought to cause migraine. Migraines are usually one sided and accompanied by other symptoms such as nausea and visual disturbances. You need to see a doctor .....headaches can be caused by many things and need to be investigated. I certainly wouldn't take imigran unless I'd had migraine diagnosed by a doctor. I take them and they do have some unwelcome side effects. I have to go to bed for a couple of hours as they make me feel quite unwell. They do however get rid of my migraines so are worth it on balance.

Just wanted to clarify: my imigran (sumatryptan) was prescribed by the doctor.

Kiddiz- what side effects have you had with it? I get a chili pepper feeling behind my eyes, almost as if I can feel the blood vessels going back to normal...

Thanks for the advice everyone, I went to the doctors today and they said I have got tension headaches. So I have been given strong painkillers.

The doctor said you can get cluster headaches everyday for about three weeks. But hopefully they will go with the pain killers. But I donot like taking them all the time.

For tension headaches, spend lots of time in the bath. If you can't do that, get a microwavable wheat bag and put it around your neck whenever you can. Combined with a cold flannel on the forehead this can really make a difference. HTH - get better soon

newlysinglemummy · 26/03/2009 23:46

oh thanks will try it where do I get a wheat bag from?

I would much rather try something else other than taking tablets all the time...

you can usually get them in boots, but lots of places do them - often with unpleasant quantities of fragrance so beware! Just look for microwaveable heat pads. Also try 4head rollons? Non drug stuff you put on your forehead. And if they're tension headaches, then a glass or 2 of wine might also help, as long as you don't mix with drugs or make a habit of it...
