Does anyone else faint a lot?

Because I do! Especially when I am tired like at the moment. Just before Christmas my GP did an ECG, tested for diabetes, anaemia, thyroid dysfunction and probably a few other things that I can't remember now.

I'm just wondering if there are any other tests that can be done or if anyone has any advice. I recognise the symptoms when it is about to happen and this morning I managed to lie down as it was happening but a few months ago I completely b***ed my hand in a fall (it still doesn't work properly) and came too with DS (7) patting my face saying "mummy are you dead?" Also worried about head injuries. Apologies for sounding neurotic. I'm not honestly

I often feel faint though very rarely actually think I will go through with it. I think I have blood sugar issues though and inevitably it's first thing in the morning and I haven't had any breakfast yet. When I was at school was much bigger problem and I was a regular fainter. How's your diet? Do you eat well/properly? Have you always done it or is it just a recent thing? Does anything in particular trigger it? For example you getting too hot or cold?

It's really not usual to pass out for no apparent reason. If all the tests you had were normal - I woud be back at that GP asking them to go further, especially as your fainting affects your daughter and her wellbeing too.

Yes, thanks ruby that was the other thing tested. BP normal.
wingandprayer, it started to get bad during my last pg (DD2 is now 2.3). It's always in the morning. I try to eat breakfast now. I didn't before

My GP was really thorough but finally said I'm just prone to it and gave me the advice you have given as well as clenching hands when I feel lightheaded, but I'm still concerned. Think I need to go back again. Thanks.

My blood sugar thing was particularly bad during my pregnancy too, which I think made my morning sickness far worse and I also had a few very near misses with fainting. When I feel faint even now I also tend to feel a bit sick too. Grabbing a biscuit on my way out is enough to see me through until after the kids are at nursery and I can get five minutes to get a proper breakfast down me - instantly sickness and faint feeling go away.

Have you even fainted when you have had breakfast, or is it always when you've skipped meals?

"Just prone to it" is pretty poor explanation from GP though and I think you should see someone else at surgery for second opinion and/or press him for referral.

I fainted for the first time in my life at hospital a few weeks ago. it was an awful feeling, so you have my sympathy.
I also think that being told that you're jsut prone to it isn't a good thing to say, you should get checked out

Galava · 25/03/2009 15:12

I used to be prone to fainting too.

Are you very slim ?

My blood pressure is on the low side which has been the thing the doctors have focussed on. Over the yeras I've put on a bit of weight and the fainting seems to have stopped. Either that or I've grown out of it !

I always knew when I was about to faint as I could hear a ringing in my ears.

I have to say unfortunately, there might not be much you can do about it.

castlesintheair · 25/03/2009 17:18

Thanks for the advice and sympathy.

Wingandprayer, yes today I fainted after I had eaten breakfast.

Galava, no not very slim although I think my BMI is about right. I used to be very slim (thin) and this never happened then

Someone said it could be lack of salt. Does this sound likely? I hardly use salt since the DCs.

I will make an appointment tomorrow and see a different GP. Thanks for giving me a nudge.
