i've got a problem with my eye which necessitataed me going onto steroids (60mg ored daily) for about 10 dats.

My BP was normal pre steroids, but during the treatemtn it went up to 150-160/100 and stayed there even when the preds were stepped down.

That was bout 2 weeks ago.
Now i am off steroids for about 7 days and i have a BP momniter at home

My bp now flutuates wildly between 115-160/75-100

Dr has ordered a 24hr moniter before she will treat the hypertension.
it seems that most of the time i'm ok now- but i suddenly get a bit shkey and feel a bit paincky- and then my BP is the high figures...

what does this all mean???
There is a family hx of hypertension/strokes/heart dis

and i am BMI 34 so i'm in a bit of a bad place jsut now.

But how can they treat my BP.
I need some more treatment for my eye to save the vision- but it could cause a stroke- so they won't give it just now.

most of the time in the last few days my bp is down to 120/75-85 so that's not too bad, but this sudden freaky increases are upsetting me.

I'm not a doctor but....

They can give you betablockers to control it to give it a chance to come down while you have the treatment. Long term, exercise/weightloss - you know the drill so I won't bother lecturing you

Sounds like you could do with learning some relaxation techniques - have you tried hypnotherapy?

Blood pressure association's website has some good info.

Good luck.

Not a doctor either but I do have high blood pressure.

Betablockers aren't used generally used to treat high BP in our age group, ACE inhibitors are usually prescribed now (or a combination of drugs)

As wmmc says, you will be advised to lose weight, do exercise, eat healthily etc. You may well be given a blood test to check cholesterol levels amongst other things.

I also take a low dose aspirin every day.

Forgot to say that they do need several readings to assess whether you need treatment and what form. White coat syndrome!

Are you under any stress or worried about something atm

oopsagain · 25/03/2009 10:03

Oh, i am very very stresswd and worried.

the eye problem has been very stressful- it took ages to find out if the health authority would fund treatment for it (complicated issue- expensive drug which has specific guidelines for approval and i didn't fit the guidelines... lost paper work..)

i am also concerned about whther or not i cna start my new contract -

mega headache due to eye problem! chest infections whilst on steroids..... i could go on...

I have lost 1/2 a stone twice this year- intially pre steroids, then I've jsut lost the wieght that the steroids put on.
And i'm aiming for mre-

But my point is that most of the time my BP is normal, then I suddenly get a panicky feeling and it is high then- i can check with a machine i have at home.

Eg all day it was fine on tuesday- i took two readings am, 115/76 and later pm 130/82

then i was watching tv and got shakey all of a sudden and stressed feeling. it was then 160/100.
next morning was all fine again.
