Infection of laparoscopy wound......would it be painful?

I had a laparoscopic procedure done about a week and a half ago. My wounds have been healing nicely, but I have noticed tonight that one of them has a concentric raised red area around it, about the size of a 10 piece, with the wound itself at 12 oclock if that makes sense. It feels a bit tingly, and this tingle is quite sharp if I prod at the wound itself (it's completely closed up). This raised red area has sprung up since mid morning as it wasn't there when I showered and dressed.

Anhyoo, I'm worried about possible staph or strep infection, but surely it would be painful?

I would get it checked - what stitches did you have, dissolveable?

LackaDAISYcal · 23/03/2009 21:54

Yes...and they have started to break down as the wounds aren't as lumpy as they were. I've also had an allergic reaction to the dressings they put on so have had the wounds uncovered. One of the areas of blistering from the dressings is looking a bit angry as well now.

TBH I was thinking allergy - I reacted to some stitches I had once

You know the answer is to get it seen to

LackaDAISYcal · 23/03/2009 22:01

I've reacted to mepore, melolin, steristrips and ordinary elastoplasts in the last ten days. I've never had any sort of reaction like that before....very odd.

I'll call the docs tomorrow.

I am a wound care specialist nurse

I can't visualise what you are explaining. (but I have drunk some wine)

Is the redness spreading from the wound or seperate

Pain is a symptom of infection but not always

I think an allergy to sutures would have shown up before now

You may have a localised infection from your aallergic reaction to the dressing

Tricky isn't it

I remember they were all set to put staples in me - then I mentioned my allergies & they had to import drag a plastic surgeon out of his bed to sew up my emergency op

the red area is around the wound, but it isn't centred on it. Imagine a clock, the stitch (and it was only one stitch) is where the 12 would be iyswim.

oh dear katymac...I bet you were popular!

It sounds like a cellulitis (skin infection )from the blisters. Off the Doc's for antibiotics.

HTH
