I start yawning but can not complete it, do the breathe in bit but not out (the satisfying bit) very

What can be causing it? What can I do?

I think I know what you mean, not sure though.

Maybe you are just not very short of oxygen?

Does it help if you are around people who yawn and 'catch' it from them?

Can you open your mouth to the height of two fingers? Do you feel pain at your TMJ joint (the one at the top of your jawbone) when you open your mouth?

mrsmaidamess · 22/03/2009 21:49

Are you trying over and over again, or is it on the odd occasion? Because I used to 'try' to yawn and its just about impossible after a while

TrillianAstra · 22/03/2009 21:50

can you catch that one?

littlelamb · 22/03/2009 21:50

So how many people caught a yawn while reading this thread!?

mrsmaidamess · 22/03/2009 21:50

I have...

come on , its contagious.

littlelamb · 22/03/2009 21:51

And why are they so catching???

mrsmaidamess · 22/03/2009 21:51

see if this fella can help

drinkmoretea · 22/03/2009 21:55

thanks!! you've cheered me up but I still can't yawn...

Tried catching it.. not working it's been like it since yesterday, I'm not trying to yawn as such, it's just like having a 'normal' yawn start off but can't finish so it keeps repeating, I can feel it 'there' at the moment...

Could be stress? I can't 'get' a breath when I'm like it, and it worries me. Do some deep relaxation. Also i have had it when i am anaemic.

kitkatqueen · 22/03/2009 22:15

yep I yawned... Sorry u aren't tho!

Plonker · 22/03/2009 22:17

How odd. I clicked on this thread and yawned.

Sorry that doesn't help you though ...

Sheeta · 22/03/2009 22:19

are you taking citalopram?

Tortoise · 22/03/2009 22:21

Nothing to add but i yawned on reading op too!

DaisyMooSteiner · 22/03/2009 22:21

Oh yes, I've had that. No idea why but it did go away within a day or two.

gibbberish · 22/03/2009 22:25

Goodness it's not just me then?

Drink water - lots of it. It does help somehow.

And get plenty of sleep too.

It's an awful feeling. I get to the point that I have pains in my chest and back because of trying to get a satisfying yawn.

When you find yourself trying to yawn, think about something else... I try to count to 100..

You have to break the cycle somehow.

drinkmoretea · 22/03/2009 22:29

Sheeta - I'm not taking citalopram

Gibberish - I will try to drink more water (yuk)

Def don't think it's stress...

Not wanting to scare you, but a friend who developed asthma as an adult said that her first attacks were like that. She didn't realise that they were asthma attacks, thought that she was getting stuck in a yawn.

If it persists for a few days, or keeps happening, then I'd be inclined to see the gp.

drinkmoretea · 22/03/2009 23:08

PC - I read something like that when I googled it! My dad has asthma, but I hadn't realised you could develop it as an adult..

This is my problem Confused
I take Citalopram, I'm on 40mg dose-so the highest! Can that have something to do with it?
