Awful 1st period after having ds2 - Is this normal? (could be tmi)

DS2 is nearly 10 months old now and I'm still bf him (twice a day).

My first period since having him started on Thurday and has been getting heavier and heavier.

Today I'm having to chance a super plus tampon every 1 1/2 hours as it's saturated and I'm leaking.

I remember my first period after having ds1 being very painful but not this heavy.

Has anyone else experienced this and did they remain this heavy (please say they don't!).

It was in my case after no 2.BF her for 13 months, then 2 months after stopping had period from hell (Think Texas Chainsaw massacre amounts of blood, eek!!)

Things have now returned to normal, you will be pleased to know

mankyscotslass · 22/03/2009 20:39

Mine was, and has done, sorry.

But I am just now keeping a diary so I can go to the doctor and ask them to sort it, I have been bad now for 21/2 years.

I do have friends that had an awful period after birth, but then it settled and was better than before, so there is hope!

nigglewiggle · 22/03/2009 20:43

Can't help with the long-term prospects, because I've only had 2 since the birth of DD2 (nearly 11 months), but mine sound very similar. I'm having to use maternity pads at night because when I get up in the night to change my tampon I'm flooding .

I'm hoping it will improve, but I've had mid-cycle spotting too this time, which is new for me, so I think I'll give it a few more months and then see Dr if it doesn't improve.

Hope someone will be along soon to reassure us!

Comewhinewithme · 22/03/2009 20:46

My dsis was like this .She once got stuck in her kitchen in the middle of the night after starting to flood and not wanting to get the blood on her new hallway carpet .

She had two like this after her ds and then had the implant in her arm fitted and she says they have basically stopped .

Hope you feel better soon .

Well at leadt I'm not alone - thanks for sharing ladies.

BTW - do any of you use a mooncup? Do you know what their capacity is? A super plus tampons absorbancy is 12-15g (I have no idea what that really means practically speaking!)I'm thinking of trying one but not if it would need changing as often as a tampon.

Now herbietea you're worrying me!

I may give the Drs a call if it's still this heavy in a day or two now - I can't afford all the towels and tampons!

Are your iron levels ok ?
DSIS also had to have a blood test and she was very low on iron .

No idea about the mooncup sorry.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 22/03/2009 20:52

I have no idea about my iron levels - they were ok when I was pg with ds2, that's all I know.

I guess if this carries on for a while they are likely to drop though.

Thanks for mentioning it, I'll keep it in mind

Thanks, I'll see how it goes tonight and perhaps get a phone consultation in the morning if it's still the same.

Really hope it's going to settle and will not be this heaviy in future

IwishIwas - let me know how you get on. I'm a bit more concerned now, but I'm sure it will be ok.

Comewhinewithme · 23/03/2009 08:37

How are you this morning ?

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 23/03/2009 10:41

It's easing up thank goodness (and thank you for asking!)

I was only up twice in the night to sort things out (and twice more for ds2 but that's another story!). This morning I'm managing 3 hours between needing to change - so lots better than yesterday.

I don't think I'll bother the Drs this time, but if the next one is as bad then I will probably have a word with them though I'm not sure there's a lot they can do.

The idea of having a 3rd child is looking more and more appealing though!!!!

girlandboy · 23/03/2009 10:48

Just been and looked at my Mooncup to check the capacity!

The highest marking on the side says 15ml, but it can take more than that, because that's only about 2/3rds up. The website states that it will hold about 30ml.

HTH

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 23/03/2009 11:13

Any idea what that is in grams? A super plus tampon is 12-15g!

OP posts:
girlandboy · 23/03/2009 12:27

1 gram = 1 ml

So 15g is the same as 15ml. On that basis then, a Mooncup should hold the same as 2 super plus tampons.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 23/03/2009 14:31

Blimey so I'd still be emptying it every 3 hours the way I was yesterday or 6 hours today.

Actually even though it's not as long as I'd hoped, it's still twice as long as a tampon.

Think I'll stick with tampons for now so that I can compare how things go but I do hope to become a mooncup convert in the not too distant future!
