mirena for heavy bleeding - did it work - side effects?

I've go to have a hysteroscopy and d&c on Thursday for heavy bleeding. Presuming everything looks OK, they are reluctant to give me a hysterectomy as I'm only 43 (nice to be too young for something occasionally so want to put in a mirena coil. I am reluctant for a few reasons:

I go on holiday for 3 weeks to Australia a few days later and am worried if anything goes wrong or have any side effects it'll ruin the holiday we've waited a year for.
The side effects in general, have googled and read the leaflet and don't fancy headaches, nausea and bloatedness. Also suffer bad pmt anyway, don't fancy anything that is going to make it worse.

So has anybody had a mirena fitted for heavy bleeding - good and bad stories please I have to make a decision in the next day or two.

Thanks

Not sure if my situation is anything like yours but after I had ds I had very heavy periods and they were roughly every 10-12 days, so I would have 4-5 days of heavy bleeding with about 7 days off then it would start again, so my GP suggested the mirena.

It was the best thing I ever did, it was painful having it inserted but after that it never gave me a minutes trouble, I have previously suffered headaches and migraines, but didnt have any when the mirena was in, I lost weight, and had no periods which was great.

Lots of people have horror stories, but you could say the same about anything.
IMHO tis amazing

Thanks for that, so far I've only heard the horror stories. It's being put in under a general anaesthetic because of the d&c etc. so that's not a problem. If it wasn't for the other tests I'd just say hold of until after the holiday and do it then. decision, decision....

I had one fitted in November for heavy periods, and it's the best thing I ever did. I had slight bleeding for the first two weeks or so, and then horredndous pains when I got my first period, about a month later.

But since then, I have had two or three days a month of very, very light bleeding, and I feel like I have got my life back.

Good luck

My experience was very similar to Mosschops - my periods are now almost non-existent.

Only side effect was being a bit weepy for a few weeks afterwards, but otherwise it's been fantastic.

Happy holidays!

I've decided to delay the tests and having the mirena put in until I'm back from holiday. I didn't fancy any side effects, bleeding continuously and the dr wouldn't do it in 2 goes (2 anaesthetics). tbh I first went to the gp over 18 months ago, have waited (privately) a month for this appointment so if there's anything nasty causing the bleeding another month won't hurt!!

I'll give it a go when I get back. Thanks everybody. It was actually good to hear at least 2 people had good stories as I've only heard negatives from friends and had decided not to give it a go. I now will, but not before big holiday.

I suffered from very heavy irregular periods since my late thirtys. Tried different pills to no avail so Dr suggested getting Mirena fitted during Polyp removal op. Had it fitted last february (08) under general anaesthetic and bled continally for 2 months though sometimes very light. I have put on roughly 1/2 stone since then which has mainly been due to quitting smoking 9 months ago. I have however over the past 4 months sufered from heavier periods again though not nearly as bad as pre Mirena, but they are occuring every 21 days now. I have also suffered from very tender breasts and bad lower abdoninal pains (more like mild labour pains than period pains) I am begining to wonder if it has dislodged or something so just wondering if anyone else has experienced this? Other side effects I have is bad PMT and heavy discharge -oh joy...

I had a Hysteroscopy , large polyp removed abd biopsy

they alsp put a mirena in

best thing I ever did, no periods since

hotcrosspurepurple · 11/04/2009 07:29

I had the mirena for heavy bleedibg, I was anaemic and could hardly walk upstaits! I have had it for a year and my periods stopped after a couple of months. The only side effect is weight gain, I have gained about 1/2 stone but I am prepared to put up with that in exchange for having my life back. It was the best thing for me.

Worked like magic for me too. Fitting it was acutely painful but the benefits far outweigh the short term pain.
