Christmas a couple of years ago I woke up with tooth ache, next morning I rang my dentist who was off until the following monday, and they gave a number for emergencies. So I ended up at a strange dentist, being told that to save my tooth would cost E1000 approximately, or I could have it out.

I hate dentists, and having fillings and the lot, plus I had to take an antibiotic (because of heart surgery in the past) and wait for an hour. The actual extraction was quite hard, though NO PAIN AT ALL. It was just the tugging and the sound that was gross. Afterwards, it didn't hurt much and I just took nurofen. I DID feel shaky and traumatised for the rest of the day. No sympathy from dh though.

Candy is it still not good? I am having my wisdom tooth out tomorrow.

violethill · 22/03/2009 09:56

What zaphod says.

I've been quoted ridiculous sums for root canal treatment to save teeth, and for back teeth I've always opted for extraction. The injections can sometimes be a little uncomfortable, but the extraction itself won't hurt - just feels a bit odd as they may have to pull and twist hard.

If you are suffering with tooth ache, it's a blessed relief though. Go for it - you will feel so much better.

foxinsocks · 22/03/2009 09:58

oh violet, are you sure you're not me?

I was quoted the most extraordinary fee for root canal, tooth fixing etc. etc. so I just had my problem tooth yanked out. Was fairly quick and instant relief.

Just do exactly what they say re looking after the hole once it's out and you'll be fine.

foxinsocks · 22/03/2009 09:59

yes, I felt a bit shaky afterwards but was fine the next day.

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 22/03/2009 10:03

Which tooth?

I had an upper wisdom tooth out last year. I was bricking it, quite frankly. The worst bit was the injection. The actual tooth removal was bizarrely fine. I felt a bit shaky afterwards (had worked myself in to a state of shock) and just had to lie on the sofa for the rest of the day feeling sorry for myself. But no pain at all so I started to feel like a bit of a fraud

Completely fine the next day.

Oh goodness- I had dry socket after my extraction back in October- Good Lord it was pure agony. All-consuming PAIN. I understand where you are coming from completely.

Basically, I went back to the dentist and he had one look, confirmed the infection, and packed it up with a little gauze pad soaked in some strong clove-smelling antiseptic. The relief was heaven. Then he gave me a weeks's course of antibiotics.

I must say, I started my first ever teaching placement the day after my extraction and never thought I'd get through each day with the amount of pain I was in, but had to keep smiling for my new class. I was almost delirious with agony!

I had root canal a month later, and although it was so much more painful than any of the extraction problems put together, at least when it was over (after 2 sessions), it was over- no side effects or after pain.

can you not rinse it a bit yourself?

my tooth extraction led to a sinus infection that lasted ages (if that makes you feel any better!) by this evening you'll feel so much better.

candyfluff · 23/03/2009 09:13

the dentist was a lovley lady who cleaned it out and gave me a perscription for a different type of ab's .she did say it was a dry socket but didnt put a dressing in it
told me to rinse with hot water lots no need for salt
and to use corsodyl mouthwash
managed to sleep well last night so hopefully the worst is over
