Hard lump under my chin by the bone, does not move and is painful - whats causing it?

We're falling apart here I just started a thread about my daughters chicken pox.

Two days ago I woke with my chin feeling like I had whacked it but I know I didnt, it felt really bruised underneath but it wasnt - just felt very tender. The next day it was still hurting so I touched the area and I can feel a lump bigger than a pea. Its very hard and doesnt move. Last night it really ached and actually made my teeth hurt. Today its not as painful but the same size.
I know you should not google healthy problems but when I did a few things came up like my body is trying to fight an infection and prob just a swollen gland in which case I will just let it run its course. But do you think its something I should get checked, feel funny going to the gp about something so small. I read somewhere that if lumps are painful then they are more likely to be harmless but I'm not sure if the pain is from the lump or because its hurting the area around it stretching it?

I often have a painful lump under my chin which I've come to believe is a swollen gland as it only seems to be there when I'm under the weather and it's a similar feeling to the glands in my neck.

Maybe best to get it checked if you're concerned though.

I had a swollen gland under my chin and a spot I picked on my chin gp said the infection had drained into gland,
it was v sore

Any teenage spots in that region?

coochicoo · 21/03/2009 21:55

Really PlumBum? I didn't realise that could happed. How interesting.

I was told by my GP that any very hard lumps need to be checked out by them.

I used to be up the doctors with swollen glands/lumps all the time, best get it looked at but because its painful it sounds more likely to be an infection reaction type thing.

Don't Google, it will drive you mad.

runforlove, it's almost certainly a swollen lymph node ("gland") - if you google for a diagram of lymph nodes of the head and neck you'll be able to see which one it is. Lymph nodes drain specific places, so you'll be able to work out if it's draining a spot or a mouth ulcer or a holey tooth or something. It will almost certainly go away by itself though.
