Who wants to play at being a doctor and diagnose my symptoms for me so I can google and convince myself I have all kinds of horrible diseases??

Before I get shouted at I have made an appointment with the GP, but it isn't until the week after next.

Right, the symptoms:

Constant hunger and eating but not putting on any weight (I lost A LOT of weight after having ds but think I have stopped losing it now, am probably still underweight though)

Hunger has started coming on suddenly and intensely so that I feel as though I might faint if I don't eat NOW.

Have had 3 dizzy spells this week, one with blurred vision. They have only lasted a minute at most and I go straight back to normal once they have passed.

Hands and feet tingling and going numb, most often at night

Don't feel ill at all otherwise, have a fair amount of energy though do find it difficult to get up in the mornings (this is down to disturbed nights from ds though I am sure).

Any ideas?

I will put my money on you having an underactive thyroid

oxcat1 · 19/03/2009 13:13

Addison's disease? Very rare, but friend had symptoms like yours before diagnosis.

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 19/03/2009 13:17

Diabetes?

TimeForMe · 19/03/2009 13:20

Oops! I meant overactive thyroid Your symptoms are similar to diabetes too though.

BarbaraWoodlouse · 19/03/2009 13:20

Thyroid? - if you are losing weight that would indicate overactive.

Type "hyperthyroid" into google and let us know what you think...

Week after next is way too long if you are dizzy etc - can't you push for a quicker appt?

Stretch · 19/03/2009 13:22

Too much alcohol?
Munchies?

Seriously, does sound a bit like diabetes, but DON'T google any more!!!

bringonthetrumpets · 19/03/2009 13:23

a tape worm?

Ledodgy · 19/03/2009 13:25

I agree with over active thyroid.

C&p'd this for you:

Hyperthyroidism has many different symptoms. In general, they relate to a speeding up of your body's metabolism. Some of the symptoms include:

feeling nervous, irritable or emotional
tremor (shaking)
sleeping poorly
being intolerant of heat and sweating more than usual
losing weight despite increased appetite (10% of people will gain weight)
feeling tired
muscle weakness
increased heart rate or palpitations
having infrequent periods or problems getting pregnant
having more frequent bowel movements or diarrhoea
shortness of breath, especially when exercising
loss of hair or finer hair than usual
swelling of the thyroid gland in the neck (goitre)
swollen/red eyes, or double vision

Elibean · 19/03/2009 13:25

I bet thyroid (overactive)

[stern] now go see the GP please

claireybee · 19/03/2009 13:31

Oooh you lot are gooooood!

Going out now but very pleased to have got so many diagnoses (no idea if that is actually the plural!). Will check back later

Elibean are you my sister? those were her exact words by text yesterday...

Don't reckon it's diabetes. I have it, and when your blood sugar levels are high (which your would be if you were un-diagnosed), the last thing you want to do is eat.

However, my BIL has recently been diagnosed with an over-active thyroid (Graves disease), and had exactly your symptoms, as well as insomnia and palpatations.

How are you sleeping clairey?

ConnorTraceptive · 19/03/2009 13:34

are you breast feeding? I only ask because I also lost a ton of weight after ds2 despite the fact that I was constantly starving and sometimes eating 3 or 4 chocolate bars in one sitting? Once I stopped feeding the weight came back

oxcat1 · 19/03/2009 13:46

Addison's causes low blood sugar, so you would get all the symptoms as described:

"Symptoms of the disease, once advanced, can include severe fatigue and weakness, loss of weight, increased pigmentation of the skin, faintness and low blood pressure, nausea, vomiting, salt cravings and painful muscles and joints."

It isn't too serious - treated with replacement steroid tablets.

Rare though, so more likely to be something else.

claireybee · 19/03/2009 15:34

Bertha, my sleeping isn't great but it never has been really, and getting up several times in the night for the past 3 years hasn't helped matters.

Connor yes I am breastfeeding and have been putting the weight loss down to that but now the sudden onset of hunger when I've only just eaten a decent meal and other symptoms have made me think it might be something more.

Barbara I have phoned GP and pushed for earlier appointment, it is now Tuesday afternoon.

Ledodgy thanks for C&P ing, it does sound a lot like me but am I now going to be imagining palpitations and hair loss?!

I would have initially have thought thyroid/metabolism changes after pregnancy and weight loss, but with the dizzy spells and tingling limbs I would guess diabetes.

No more googling, it never really helps you become anything but more of a worrier. Wait and see what you Dr suggests.

I hope it goes well X

ijustwant8hours · 19/03/2009 16:27

I'm hyper thyroid at the moment. It sounds very similar....

nightcat · 19/03/2009 17:27

getting up at night suggest diabetes..?
