Migraine and tinnitus-is this normal or should I be worried?

sunshineandsnowflakes · 19/03/2009 12:16

Migraine started last tues. I have a history of back and neck problems and I really think it's all connected with that. (I think I did something in the gym which made something in my neck or back tense up and cause the migraine). I have only ever had one migraine before years ago.

Was fine wed and then from thu-sun was in bed all day apart from two visits to Doctor and one to hospital (on Sat-was getting desperate).

I have been given Solphadeine, then diazepam(valium)-to relax muscles app., then diclophenic and anti sickness tablets on sat (as was feeling nauseous all the time).

Finally, on Sunday the migraine seemed to go but on Monday morning whilst stretching in bed I jarred my neck which is now really stiff and causing a headache (nowhere near as bad as migraine though) but I also have this weird noise in my ears. It's like they are a bit blocked and feels like a "humming" in my ears. Is this tinnitus? Am terrified it's never going to go. Thought it might get better when my neck eased but neither of them seem to be getting better. It's really getting me down now.

Can anyone help/reassure me?

get yourself back to your gp pronto. Any new symptom has to be seen and tinitus does not sound good, forgive the pun..
I am suprised you where only given painkillers for neck pain and nothing like imigran that is specifically for migraine.
Give the gym a miss until you have a much better idea about what is causing this pain.
good luck

sunshineandsnowflakes · 19/03/2009 12:59

Thank you.

Yes, I will call gp for another appointment. Every day I have had to have a sleep for 1-2 hours in the afternoon and my eyeballs (yuck-that sounds horrible!) feel very tender too.

this does not sound good, we all just ignore our aches and pains as it can be such a hassle getting to the gp sometimes, but i really think you need to be checked on again today.

WowOoo · 19/03/2009 13:07

I would book yourself in somewhere for a good head, neck and upper back massage. Shiatsu or aromatherapy.

Hope it goes soon. By the time I go for a massage it's usually better.

WowOoo · 19/03/2009 13:08

I mean in addition to seeing GP as you are in pain and need painkillers. Didn't mean to sound flippant there, know what it's likew.

thehuntress · 19/03/2009 17:45

I agree that you should see a GP, but I get headaches and I know that some medications can cause tinnitus as a side effect. I know you aren't taking these - but any type of aspirin based product that thins the blood makes my ears ring. It usually goes after the medication wears off.

My tinnitus is also triggered by stress. When it started, I too thought it would be 'forever' but it does eventually go.

I know that probably isn't too helpful, but hope you are feeling better.

sunshineandsnowflakes · 20/03/2009 19:30

Thank you everyone.

Saw my GP this morning as was feeling really rough again and headache seemed to be coming back. She now thinks it may be sinusitis. So have antibiotics.

Even if it's not that, maybe the antibiotics will kill whatever it is - virus maybe?

Hello,

With the greatest of respect for GP's, they have little to offer where these types of problems occur. Bones trapping nerves are very likely the cause of your difficulty.

Find a really good chiropractor. By really good, I mean one who is well respected. A member of www.chiropractic-uk.co.uk/default.aspx?m=1&mi=1 is best. Mine in St.Austell is brilliant. I even travelled back from my home in France to see him when all else failed!

Hello everyone,

Just wanted to come back on as I am still feeling ill and had another migraine attack on tues night which floored me for 4-5 hours.

Saw Doctor again who is adamant it's muscular and have given me more diclofenic. Not sure it these are helping and make me feel nauseous.

Have had two cranial treatments which seemed to help on Friday but then felt head felt really tender on Saturday and spent most of the day in bed after taking a valium (they do seem to help).

Just been reading on here that there is a weird virus going round and wondering if it's that? My symtoms sound very similar. As I type, behind my right eye feels strained and all the way round to the back of my head feels tender and my eyeballs still feel sore. My ears still feel blocked (like they have water in them).

I'm now going into my fourth week of this and getting so down with it. Haven't got much energy-all I want to do is lie down.

Husband is insisting I go back to Doctor. This would be my sixth visit!!

Am wondering if it's this virus. Any advice please??

Do you have funds to see a private doctor.

I don't know what to say without scaring you, but symptoms of pressure in the eyes, a blocked/ater logged sensation in the ears and sudden severe headaches plus neck pain all sound like soemthing is causing pressure in your brain.

Sorry, I have some experience of the worst cse scenarios here through friends/family.

Odds say it is not that serios but symptoms say make sure.

The person I am thinking of is so young that she got fobbed off by GP until sh got very ill.

All people alive and well, btw.

hobbgoblin · 29/03/2009 23:50

God I'm really sorry that my post is likely to sound scary. Do get another opinion or several.

sunshineandsnowflakes · 30/03/2009 00:01

Thanks hobbgoblin. Don't worry! I have been scaring myself stupid imagining all sorts anyway!

Yes, we have BUPA cover and family keep saying to insist on a scan and tests.

I suppose what stopped me was that I have had back and neck problems in the past and I fell and banged my head skiing over a month ago and also overdid an induction session at the gym so was sort of agreeing with my GP that it could easily be muscular.

These blocked ear symptoms though are weird and the fact it has gone on so long and I am so tired...just wondered if it could be this virus?

Erm, does the pain alleviate when you lie down - even a tiny bit?

The neck pain could cause a headache obviously. Ironically, my friends' DD who actually has a tumour at the base of her brain was rushed to hospital a week or so ago due to neck pain and headache. They all assumed it was the tumour growing, but it wasn't and she had just pulled muscles in her neck! She still has the tumour but it is not causing any problems.

If you've got BUPA cover, tell your Gp and you may find they fix you up quickly with a referral if you are paying for it.

I'm sure it would be worth it for peace of mind.

sunshineandsnowflakes · 30/03/2009 00:09

Yes, it does but it's not always there and it's not always in the same place.

It's more the constant headache, eyeball pain and blocked ears at the moment.

Plus, started to get a sore throat today-just another thing to throw into the mix!

OP posts:
hobbgoblin · 30/03/2009 00:12

Well, with friends' DD with tumour - she was told that if the pain doesn't go at all when she lies down then she needs to come in, otherwise she can assume it's just a regular headache. So, that's Good News!

What happens if you try steam inhalation?

thumbbunny · 30/03/2009 00:14

could be a virus, or could easily be neck tension/ vertebral misalignment issues.

Antibiotics won't touch a virus, you just have to wait it out.

If you see a good chiropracter/osteopath, they will be able to deal with neck misalignments. Some chiros will do X rays first.

I had transient vertigo for years - got sent to ENT by GP for ear-checking and was told I was stuck with it because I had a damaged inner ear - then I had osteopathy and it was fixed. If I put my neck out again, I get the vertigo again - due to pressure on the nerves in the neck. SO - your GP might not be the best person to advise you as they don't always have all the answers - it's worth seeing other professionals as well. Many chiros/osteos are covered by BUPA so you'll be able to get treatment through them.

sunshineandsnowflakes · 30/03/2009 00:15

Yes, tried that as well. Also had antibiotics for a week-didn't do anything.

If I still feel rough in the morning will call GP. Am fed up-just want to feel normal again.

Think I had better go to bed. Looking a computer is not helping!

Thanks hobbgoblin!

@sunshineandsnowflakes did the blocked ears feeling go away? I know this is well over a decade old lol

ILikeToBeBesideTheSea · 18/02/2021 09:40

@Mehripoop Hello, I remember you on a thread a while back about tinnitus (I've name changed since). How are you getting on?

Mehripoop · 18/02/2021 10:01

@ILikeToBeBesideTheSea I’m okay. I have awful ear and throat pain so thinking the tinnitus is down to that. Doctors saying it’s all a symptom of depression and the childbirtj trauma I suffered last year Sad . How are you?

ILikeToBeBesideTheSea · 18/02/2021 10:22

I'm ok too. Still got the tinnitus and does really get me down some days but I'm also having some 'ok' days. Still trying to accept that I've got it for life now - it's been 4 months since it started. I've read/heard that your brain adjusts over time so it's not as annoying but that can take up to 2 years! Hope you find some answers for yours or find a way forward for living with it.

Mehripoop · 18/02/2021 17:39

Me too. It’s awful @ILikeToBeBesideTheSea I hope we’re the few people who it just disappears for. Do you get fullness in your ears too?

ILikeToBeBesideTheSea · 18/02/2021 19:25

@Mehripoop I'm trying to accept it rather than hope it goes away then if it does it'll be a pleasant surprise! I don't get ear fullness but I do feel a bit more sensitive with some sounds but that's getting better. I have something wrong with my jaw/muscles on one side which has been going on as long as the tinnitus so I'm hoping when that gets better the tinnitus might improve. For now I'm just finding ways to manage it, some days are better than others! I think the trick is to just keep busy, my 'bad' days are definitely when I'm not doing much.

Mehripoop · 18/02/2021 19:56

@ILikeToBeBesideTheSea yeah I agree. I don’t know hear it much when I’m busy. But the moment I’m alone- it’s there.
