I have been hard of hearing for as long as I can remember. I finally admitted defeat earlier on in this pregnancy that maybe I needed a hearing aid.

I needed two lol.

I had them fitted yesterday and I am finding it quite difficult to get used to hearing little inconspicuous sounds.

DD is very noisy lol and the dogs just drive me crazy at the minute.

Anyone else had to deal with this transition of not hearing an awful lot to hearing so much noise and sounds? How did you cope or did you just have to wait and get used to wearing the aid(s)??

Even the click of the mouse and the tapping of the keyboard is driving me crazy. I have turned them down as low as they can go without totally turning of the aid.

The gentleman I saw yesterday configured the aids to suit my hearing while I was there, but it was in a sound proofed room.
When I left that room it sounded like an explosion lol.
Got into the waiting room and there was a TV on the other side of the room, I could hear it.
That is a novelty for me.

Dh is so pleased that the TV doesn't have to be very loud anymore but I really cant see me getting used to all these sounds.

My MIL found the same and hated hearing all the little noises so much that she threw away her hearing aid after 3 days!

insertwittynicknameHERE · 19/03/2009 07:52

Oh I don't think I will throw them away, I do like being able to hear, I am just freaked out by all the little creaks in my house. It sounds like there is someone walking about upstairs.

I had one hearing aid to start with then got the second one about 6 months later.

I was told to take it very gently, an hour each day?? Just in the house to start with, the man wrote out a schedule for me to follow. The idea is to let your brain get used to hearing things like the washing machine/fridge.

It worked very well. It's not totally ideal as walking down the road always involves car noise and/or wind blowing past my ears. The children do insist on trying to talk to me as we walk in the street, I can't hear unless we stop and I face them and look right at their faces.

For a year or so I'd be quite scared of windy days, I'd genuinely think it was about to be a hurricane, the noise was incredible, but everyone else seemed to carry on as normal. LOL. I have got used to the fact that the wind in the trees can be amazingly violent.

There are so many birds too. My life has improved so much with being able to hear better. It really is worth it for me. Good luck.

That sounds like a better way to do it, he told me to wear them as much as possible and TBH I had a bit of a headache after a few hours. I wore them all the way home down the motorway yesterday and it was murder lol.

I found that the birds are very loud also, and a bit too high pitched for me lol.

Well, just tell those birds to pipe down!

I forgot about my car engine. When I got to the stage of wearing the aid for a short car trip, I thought there was something wrong with the engine. So much information about gears etc comes from how it sounds. I felt much happier being able to take hearing aid out and hear for myself that the car was running properly/normally. I got used to it after a while. Like the birds, it was much more high pitched than I was used to.

I also did a phased introduction (was about 10 years ago). I remember getting freaked by the sounds of keyboards tapping, or driving over a man hole cover! It is very disconcerting to begin with and it takes a while for the brain to learn to filter out sounds that are in the background... Also hearing aids can make sounds a bit more tinny/mechanical and that takes a bit of getting used to! Once your brain has figured it out, it's a revelation!

insertwittynicknameHERE · 19/03/2009 08:25

I find the aids really comfortable TBH and towards the end of yesterday I almost forgot I had them in. The noise is driving me crazy TBH (I know how DH feels living with me now lol)

Is it just time that I need to get used to everything or is there anything else that I can do?

I don't wear hearing aids myself but my 8yr old DD does. I remember the audiologist saying that loud noises would sound even louder to her than to us. She's got used to most things now but still hates ambulance and police sirens suddenly driving past us when we are walking home! If you don't get used to them after a while I would consider going back and having them re-set. I think every time my DD has had new hearing aids we have had to do this. The last time was because they were too quiet! Good luck with them!

Thanks, Things are really loud and sometimes quite tinny, I am sure I will get used to it, it is just quite hard getting used to all the different noises.
