i've been weaning my dd on solids now for a month 1/2 veg and fruit for the past 3 weeks...just wondering if it's normal for them to experience tummy problems during this stage. she is now waking 3-4 times a night in pain and wriggles and cries from about 6pm till 10pm when she finally falls asleep. any advise out there!!!

When we started weaning dd we had the same problem and I am convinced that it was the store bought foods that gave her tummy ache (like baby rice, farleys rusks with milk etc.) She was allways best with homemade food like potato mixed with fruit or other vegetables. The only way we stopped the crying was with baby massage and lots of cuddling and walking around.

I don't think it's normal, and it's a shame for you and dd to suffer. Are you introducing only one new food every 3 days? And giving it for 3 days in a row, so you can see what the effect is? I was advised to do this by my health visitor and it is also recommended by the dreaded Gina Ford's contented baby book, which gives a useful timetable of food to introduce, starting with the least allergenic things like pear and rice, and working up to hard-to-digest things like banana. This way you know what is causing the problem and can avoid it. We have a lot of food allergies in the family but so far no probs at all with dd1 now aged 2.5.

Poor you two. Sorry i cant really offer any advice but it doesnt sound normal from what Ive heard - my ds is only 6 months himself so I dont really know a lot about the whole thing.

One thing did occur to me though - you don't say how old your little one is - maybe you could just stop for a couple of weeks and see if things improve then? I did that with ds who was not at all enthusiastic at 4 months but fine at 5. I gather that its fine to wait until 6 months even.
Lots of luck

oceans now 6 months and we didn't start until she was 19 weeks old mainly because she seemed to be having problems with milk. that finally sorted it's self out and we started. she's seems to be digesting better now that we've gone against the advise of the HV (useless) who insisted that her main veg meal be given a night time. did this for a week and a half before realising that this could be the problem, HV still insisting that it would sort it's self out and to continue. since last monday changed her main meal to lunch time and something light in the evenings. the change has been slow but we were reward over the weekend with a much happier, settled baby. What are HV's for...making life harder. my experience with my one has just been one long nightmare. anyway, just want to say thanks for all the wonderful advise given.

What age is she juejue? If she is less than 6 months then stop for a while. Till that age she really only needs milk.

mears · 14/04/2003 11:14

Woops, just realised I didn't notice the last message was from you. Glad things have improved.

juejue - glad to hear things are improving. I also give the main meal at lunch time but only because tea time always seems to go wrong somehow and I got sick of cooking all those tiny amounts of veg and then just throwing it away. Hope things go from good to great and she's scoffing away in no time
