Thrush/allergy to sanitary products, advice please...

Been having a break for ages but need some advice and MN is the answer I hope!

Right, been having thrush on and off for a few years now but since having baby 18 months ago been having it pretty much every month when im on my period. Been taking fluconazole quite a bit which works mostly, take pessary sometimes to give my body a break from the fluconazole but they are hit and miss so far as efficacy goes.

Started taking a supplement of 'good bacteria', still didn't make much difference. I am pretty good with all the self help stuff apart from the fact that I do love my skinny jeans! Ie no hot baths, scented products etc.

Once when I thought I had thrush, GP took some swabs and everything came back clear (tested for pretty much everything). Now I have concluded that I am allergic to sanitary towels ( can't use tampons at all) so found some really friendly ones that don't use plastic or chlorine or anything. I think what it happening is I get irritated, that causes me to itch (TMI) and that turns into thrush.

Just wondered if anyone had suffered anything similar at all??

I thought I was the only one with this - can't wear towels for long periods (i.e. overnight) I find the best thing is to alternate between towels and tampons but it is really uncomfortable living with the burning sensation....would love to see some advice - although I'm thinking a mooncup might be the only way to go.....

psychomum5 · 17/03/2009 20:05

happens to me too.

I now use re-usable pads as I have a coil and so there is no way a mooncup is going near (or up) me!!

PlumBumMum · 17/03/2009 20:08

Oh there was athread last week about them

EdieMcredie · 17/03/2009 20:10

Right, will have a read. Bit worried about them as they sound fiddly but I bet they are good once you get used to them.

Pepa-overnight is the worst, I mean you can change them often during the day but im thinking setting my alarm every hour or so aint practical!

Heres the thread

Those modern towels even with names like 'silk' are just plastic and filled with super absorbent chemicals.
I don't like using them, they make me feel sweaty, aggravate my piles, they start to stick to my bum and labia after a while if my flow is light (like they are trying to absorb the moisture from my skin if there's no 'liquid coming' (sorry tmi!). I use nice cotton maternity pads at night and/or washable cotton pads in the day which I got online from somewhere, they are made by popolini. I also use all the old boosters from the boy's washable nappy days for nights or if I'm just at home.

(Not a mooncup kinda gal!)

PlumBumMum · 17/03/2009 20:26

I think nightime clinched it for me, I hate all the leaking and then I'm always sore after period, so have to go get one

psychomum5 · 17/03/2009 20:31

kerry, not at the mo as right now I am not letting anyone near me until I have had my hosptial appointment (30th march).

something wrong with my head and eyes now, and I also have low WBC for some reason.

I actually am enjoying the walking ability again now the pain has gone.

it is coming out ASAP after that tho, believe me!

EdieMcredie · 17/03/2009 20:32

Wow thanks this is all brilliant stuff. It makes you feel so dirty!

Im trying 'natracare' which are doing the job so far but it's early days...

I can sometimes get away with natracare products but when things are very sore I use washable pads. I was a bit worried about using them with thrush but they seem fine.

EdieMcredie · 17/03/2009 22:42

Wow, have bookmarked that page. For me, itching is the worst. But it is sore too

Could it be BV? I had that once and felt like very bad thrush. Also I went to doctor for thrush, vaginal and oral, this week and she is sending me to dermatologist to check for lichen which I hadn't heard of but is skin complaint that cab affect vulva and tounge.

Ceolas · 17/03/2009 23:23

I'm the same as psycho (minus the coil)

EdieMcredie · 18/03/2009 07:11

Well just had some further swabs last week testing for anything bacterial and GP hasn't been in touch so I assume not but was going to ring this morning to check. Will research lichen.
