Quitting Smoking

prettyfly1 · 17/03/2009 10:33

There used to be loads of threads on this but cant find them anywhere.

Into my third day as a quitter and wondering if anyone wants to join me. I quit twice before, once for three months, once for twelve but I always go back - any advice from former non smokers on staying off for good??

I am going to smoking matters tonight so will be joining you soon

What are you doing to quit? looking for insipation

PurplePillow · 17/03/2009 10:37

Woops forgot to change back to my name

Makes a change from Trinity

I'm stopping too. I smoke about once a month, and apparently that is enough to keep the little nicotine receptors happy if I take a bit of NRT in the meantime. I'm fed-up with it, and it's time to stop again.

For me, it helps to remember that it's so boring smoking and all you smoke for is to reduce the craving and stop you wanting another cigarette. In the meantime, it stinks, costs lots of money, and wrecks your lungs. Oh the joys of being a slave to nicotine!

So... I will be free of the weed if I don't smoke for about 3 months... Onward!

My inspiration is money. I really want to go on hols etc and to be honest I feel embarrassed by it. I see other women smoking when out and about and I just think bleurgh - especially the older ones. It doesnt look nice at all!! I just started a new job and I dont want to be sneaking out for fags or concerned that I stink. Also I am having real trouble with me teeth and they are becoming really stained which is just nasty!! The money I save can help pay for some natty dental work

GOOD LUCK TO YOU GUYS TOO!!

Btw I am a really heavy smoker so am using the patches and on complete detox - no caffeine to try and clear my system and I have to say, I dont feel bad actually.

Good luck. My Dad kicked the habit by going to smoking cessation classes. He smoked for over 40 years and stopped 10 months ago. I am sooo proud of him.

prettyfly1 · 17/03/2009 11:01

Yeah I wish my dad would quit. Worry about him now!!

My inspiration is to get my new dd... I'm adopting but my approval has been put on hold until I stop smoking.

Dr has mentioned the tablets but will see what smoking matters say tonight.

MmeLindt · 17/03/2009 11:10

I guess that is the course that my dad went on. He still goes along every now and then, to support others. He was at the hospital last week to encourage others to start attending the classes.

He has gone to classes before, but never ones where you could keep going once you had stopped, sort of like Weightwatchers that you keep going when you have reached your target.

prettyfly1 · 17/03/2009 11:19

Purple that is a fantastic reason to stop and I think I speak for us all when I say GOOD LUCK. Best reason in the world. How long do you have to stay off for?

Sorry Prettyfly, had to go out to take my dm shopping

A and f have said 6 to 12 months( was a bit gutting as have had approval for almost 2 years)

Long road ahead but determined to do it for me and my dd as she is desperate for her little sister

PurplePillow · 17/03/2009 17:24

Anyone else want to sign up??

prettyfly1 · 17/03/2009 17:24

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh - wishing you every luck in the world - I have to admit though I find it a bit shocking that they stop willing and loving parents adopting over smoking. I know smoking is a horrid habit but with so many little ones in foster care, which is worse in many cases I think it is a bit much. Personal opinion tho.

I agree with you, I feel as if the placement has been held back, although they knew from the first point of contact that I was a smoker, and almost all the social workers I have dealt with are all smokers!

In fact I said to my link worker that if I had to stop so should he and he agreed but it will never happen

Oh well 1/2 hr till my appointment so hopefully this is the start of working towards my new dd at last

prettyfly1 · 17/03/2009 17:57

Good for you - I shall be supporting you all the way!!

I've heard of that book Marla, I think |I will read that as well (the more things to help quit the better)

prettyfly1 · 17/03/2009 19:33

I tried that one but it didnt really work for me - that said two months later I have stopped again so it definitely put the idea back in ma head.

Definitely PP - WE CAN DO IT!!!
