It was really painfull for me, I had had 2 previous C-sections before I got the coil and omg it really really hurt. My blood pressure dropped realy low, I was dizzy and felt sick from the pain.
I only kept it in for about 6 weeks as I had really bad bleeding, cramps and ended up with 2 infections.
I know its different for everyone but my experience was not great.

I had mine fitted last june, thought it would be bad, but had some ibuprofen before I went and it was no worse than a smear, a few cramps but not as bad as I'd imagined. I had it done at the fp clinc as nobody was trained to do it at my GPs, I think this helped as they lots of experience of fitting them.

rhksmum, sorry to jump in on the thread but what were your infection symptoms. I got a coil fitted on 9th Feb and have pretty much had constant bleeding and pain since then. Will it stop.

Herbgarden sorry for hyjacking your thread.

had mine done last july, didn't really hurt, just a few owwww's.. No C sections here though...

I think deep breathing and trying to relax really helped.

Singyswife-

my symptoms were high temperature, a foul smell coming from the bleeding and a very tender stomach.

JohnnyTwoHats · 14/03/2009 22:00

I have just pulled my coil out after suffering from nasty side effects for about 6 months (ish) see my other thread, side effects are not confined to the Mirena.

herbgarden · 14/03/2009 22:03

Oh dear - nothing positive hear then ?!....maybe I'll stick to the mini pill (although for now a 7 week old newborn feeding twice in the night with toddler in tow and also sleeping in separate bedrooms is the best form of contraceptive !!).

I was told by GP that if you find smear tests very painful a coil will be a hundred times worse. So I went on Cerazette instead! You can ask to be referred to a gynae for fitting and apparently they are better at it and avoid much of the owwwyyness.

Is the theory that vaginal birth renders your bits insensitive then?

naturalblonde · 14/03/2009 22:08

I had a coil fitted about a month ago, after 2 normal births, it hurt like hell having it fitted, I had to have a nurse come in to hold my hand . Afterwards was like really bad period pains but only for a day. Have had light spotting on and off since, but no other side effects.

rhksmum · 14/03/2009 22:14

my Gp said the reason mine was so painful to fit was because I had had the 2 previous c-sections and had a lot of scar tissue there. She said if I had had a vaginal birth it would have been easier for her to put in as my cervix would have been easier to open.

Whether thats true or not I dont know

I found having a coil fitted was painful inspite of having a vaginal delivery. I also had horrible side affects for about 3 to 4 months afterwards.

The cervix does not want strange foreign objects in it and tries to get rid of them. That is why having a coil fitted is so painful.

Just as its painful if something gets in your eye or a splinter under your skin.
