Labyrinthitis, a virus that affects balance, gp said there is lots of cases at the moment, so if anyone has been feeling dizzy too this could be to blame.

Chellesgirl · 13/03/2009 23:57

Did he say that it could be harmful?

CountessDracula · 13/03/2009 23:58

i have had this
it resolves pretty fast but you do feel odd for a few days

Blarbie · 13/03/2009 23:59

Argh! I had labyrinthitis once. Worst illness I've ever had. I was off work for 2 weeks - never been off before or since.
I feel for you, it was so disorientating, I felt drunk. Once it went I was fine, there are websites on it that can really scare you!!

whoingodsnameami · 14/03/2009 07:43

Chellesgirl, no, he just said the worst would pass in around 7 days, he gave me some tablets that I have to take 3 times a day.

Blarbie, awful is'nt it, I never did like the feeling of being drunk, let alone feeling like it 24/7 while trying to look after 3 kids on my own, the gp told me I am safe to drive but I have only driven when the kids are at school and only when necessary, no way I am driving with the kids in the car til it passes.

Don't drive!

I couldn't even get out of bed.

I just lay there, hanging onto the bed for dear life, feeling like I was about to fall off.

It's vile!

I get short, more minor recurrences now of a thing called BPV (benign positional vertigo) which I think is as a result of having had labrynthitis.

ABetaDad · 14/03/2009 08:03

My wife suffered from constant dizzyness for over a decade. It means she cannot drive. The doctors cannot find out what is wrong, she thinks it may be related to blood pressure, blood sugar or even certain types of food.

Mostly it is at a low level but occassionally she has a severe attack - like yesterday. She just falls over like a tree I will mention this to her as she is going to see the GP on Monday. It is unlikley to be a virus lasting this long but useful to know it is going around at the moment.

whoingodsnameami · 14/03/2009 08:06

Littlefish I think I must have it fairly mild then, as I seem to be coping as normal, am just very tired and the dizzy spells are not constant, though saying that, I feel a little worse today, have ringing in my ear too, I dont think it helps that I perforated my ear drum 3 ytears ago and it never healed

shootfromthehip · 14/03/2009 08:09

I think I had this about 3 weeks ago- I couldn't sit on my dining room chairs or the loo without hanging on as I thought I was going to fall over or pass out! I happened to be a the doctor for something else and they just dismissed it as tiredness. As a mum of two small kids I am perpetually bloody knackered but I knew that this was not just a lack of sleep. It lasted really badly for a week and then went but I am still a little on the lightheaded side ocassionally. How iinteresting.

Hope you are feeling better x

DontCallMeBaby · 14/03/2009 08:10

BetaDad have they ruled out Meniere's disease? My friend has this, it's horrible, fortunately lets up when she's pregnant, which she is for the second time now. I'd be surprised if it hadn't be considered though.

whoingodsnameami · 14/03/2009 08:11

Abetadad, The gp said the worst would be over within a week, he gave me a huge box of tablets, he said to take 3 a day for 5 days, then as and when needed, he did say I may get reminders of the virus for a few years, but it will be few and far between, so not sure if he is saying it is actually an incurable problem, some websites I have looked out suggest it can last years with different levels of severity, but I try not to take too much notice of info I find on the internet, but yes, I think its definately a good idea to get your wife to mention this to gp

ABetaDad · 14/03/2009 09:10

DontCallMeBaby - she has supposedly been tested for Menieres diesease but it was ten years ago. Very interesting that your friends suffers less during pregnancy. I have sometimes thought that my wife is worse during her period.

whoingodsnameami - wow that sounds a lot like my wife. Thanks ever so much for this I will tell her. If it is anything like what my wife had it certainly has lasted years. Frequency and intensity of attacks vary but whenever she is feeling ill geenrally or having her period or even just having had a late night and a heavy meal she feels it much more.

Would you mind if I ask what tablets you had?

whoingodsnameami · 14/03/2009 09:17

Yeah sure, I was given, Betahistine Hydrochloride 8mg tablets. I cant tell you if they work yet as I was only given them yesterday, they nned to be taken with or after food.

whoingodsnameami · 14/03/2009 09:26

Crikey, I just googles those tablets, and reports suggest they may aid weight loss too

OP posts:
whoingodsnameami · 14/03/2009 09:26

googled, even.

ABetaDad, I think a lot of women can become more dizzy and clumsy during their period. I am not sure where I read that or if there is any science to back it up but it is certainly my experience. Maybe thats why her condition worsens at that time.

ABetaDad · 14/03/2009 12:06

whoingodsnameami - thanks for the name of the tablets. I just mentioned them to my wife and she joked that sehe is size ten already so 'weight loss' might mean a whole new wardrobe!

Just as an aside - bizzarely her dizzyness condition disappeared during chemotherapy and then came back when it stopped. Maybe the chemo did kill of a virus or surpress it. She got the balance problem years before the cancer.

Toots · 16/03/2009 16:20

Who in... I have been having bouts of sea-like dizzyness since Thursday - and most of today.

Are the tablets helping?

ABetaDad · 16/03/2009 16:34

My wife just went to see the GP about hers only five minutes ago so will post back what he says.

Sadly, I do think hers is incurable.

ABetaDad · 16/03/2009 18:48

.. and she came back with a massive box of Betahistine Hydrochloride 8mg tablets that she has to take for 10 days.

giraffescantdancethetango · 16/03/2009 18:54

Have had labyrinthitis many times before - seem to be prone to it.

Sometimes I get so bad with it that I need to get an injection. Sending much sympathy, its awful.

Sleep as much as you can. I do not reccomend driving!!! Infact Im not sure if you would be insured to drive like that? I have always been told definetly NOT to drive.

whoingodsnameami · 18/03/2009 16:33

Hi, yes the tablets do work, only suffer slight dizzyness if I make sudden head movements, oh and trampolining and hula hooping I would not recommend

abetadad, hope your wifee has some success with the tablets
