The skin is falling off my head (beyond dandruff)

I can't even call it dandruff for the last month or so big flakes of my scalp are stuck in my hair and coating my clothes

I love my hair, it looks shiney and healthy is not greasy or dry and I'm not on any medication. Have had dandruff a few times in the past and stuff like t-gel has helped but nothing like this.

am using head & shoulders atm despite my hair being coloured and it's not even touching it

oh honey. Maybe you have what I was diagnosed with. Is your head insanely itchy? Does it weep at all yet?

Don't panic. There is prescription treatment. Do you have these symptoms?

mascaraohara · 12/03/2009 16:07

LOL and at weeping. no it does't weep yet

it's in itchy all the time at the moment.. don't want to go docs incase they tell me I can't have it coloured anymore [vain emoticon]

have tried somethiing for scalp psoriasis even that doesn't seem to be helping.

my mum is convinced I'm not washing my shampoo out properly I've not been washing my hair by myself for the last 20 years or anything

no no. Don't panic. I suffered months of crazy dandruff, then it got larger and more sore and itchy. T gel didn't work for me. I went to the doctor twice and he gave me steroid lotions but it didn't cure it. The third time I got a very sympathetic female Dr who saw my distress (physical and emotional from the dandruff) and referred me to the hospital dermatology clinic.

I was diagnosed with stage 3 seborrheic dermatitis where the yeast overproduces on the scalp. Basically growing skin too fast. They prescribed a thick cream called Cocois that smells like tgel. You apply it at night and put an old pillowcase over your pillow as it stains (and smells). The next morning you wash it off with a prescription shampoo called Capasal, then when your hair is still damp and scalp soft, apply a small amount of liquid steroid.

I know it sounds like a fuss but I left it so long that stage three is very bad (goes to 4). The very first time I used the prescription I cried the next morning when all the scale fell off. I applied only a couple more times until it was gone. From then on they recommend to only use the shampoo to keep it at bau if it seems to be returning.

It might be helpful for you to know that what I had is unexplained. There seems to be no reason behind this appearing although I would suggest looking at stress levels. It happened to me the year following m DS1's traumatic birth, and coincidentally started to reappear the same number of months after DS2's birth. This time round I recognised the itch and appearance of dandruff and used just some of the shampoo and it went!!

As a fellow dyer I missed my hair colour but I can dye it again now!!

Do go and seek help and use my info if need be because I think it can be misunderstood as bad dandruff. Only when I burst into tears at my Parenting group did another lady sat she suffered from it once too.

I love you. you have made me feel so much better

since I posted this I'm wondering if it coincides with changing my pill about 4 months ago (also started a thread about that today too) it has got me wondering

glad there is a cure, will see doc when I next go back

I have to admit it's gross. worse as I wear a lot of black (usually)

oh god don't get me started on the clothes! I used to love slinky black tops but being covered in a snowfall kind of ruined the effect...

Back in 2005/6 there was not much, if any info online about it. These days there is loads.

Go get it checked out, get those lotions on and you'll be rocking a new hair colour on a Friday night in a nice black number!!!

sounds like psorises. I've had this on my scalp since I was 16

nothing from the Dr helped, keep stress levels down, take zinc supplement, dont scratch it

Once a week I coat my head in baby oil, let it soak in then scrub all the skank off charming emotion

... really, it's ok to live with, just learn to manage it and what may trigger it.
