I have what I think is an ulcer on the side of my tongue it started about a week ago I thought it was a spot but it doesnt seem to be healing I have tried antiseptic mouth wash to no avail. Does anyone know what it could be and the best course of treatment please.

I suffer alot from mouth ulcers, they can take ages to heal, have found the best thing is to use corsodyl mouthwash, drink lots of water and cut out sweets, apparently they love sugar and drier mouths. If it doesn't heal soon might be worth a trip to the doctor or dentist to ensure it's nothing more serious though?

I react badly (well my ulcers do) to corsodyl

Hot salty water to gargle with works (as hot & as salty as you can gargle with

Ask Gp/dentist for Adcortyl in Orabase? Or steroid pellets, the name escapes me at the moment. Both are steroid based but work v quickly.

Adcortyl is great for the ones inside you lip or on your tongue - I find it difficult to apply to ones in my cheek

Steroids are fab & work very well - but you are unlikely to get them for one ulcer - I had them for a single one which covered 45% of my mouth & tongue

Adcortyl is great, if a bit unpleasant to use. I find Anbesol is good. Stings at first, then numbs it.
I can't use corsodyl as it makes the whole of my mouth numb.

For future reference, thankfully ulcer free at present , can you buy adcortyl over the counter or do you need a perscription? I always get a mouthful of ulcers if I'm at all run down.

Thankyou all for your replies and advice my ulcer seems to be healing now but it was starting to worry me as it was there for a week I have never had anything like this before. To start with I thought it was a spot on my tongue. I feel sorry for all of you as they are very painful I hope I dont get one again.
